Dom Robert, religious name of Guy de Chaunac-Lanzac, a Benedictine monk from the Abbey of En Calcat located in the Tarn, is one of the masters of contemporary tapestry. His artistic vocation began in the 1920s. As a young draftsman, he enrolled at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris. In 1930, he entered the Benedictine Abbey of En Calcat where his art and religious vocation flourished. In 1940, upon returning from the war, he experienced a true revelation in front of the spectacle of a farmyard, which revealed to him his pictorial universe. In 1941, his meeting with Jean Lurçat, who was impressed by his early works, illuminated manuscripts, and watercolors, decided his fate as a painter-cartoonist. His works were woven in Aubusson at Tabard and then at Suzanne Goubely (the Goubely Workshop).
Between 1947 and 1958, he continued his work at Buckfast Abbey in England and, showcased by major galleries like La Demeure in Paris, he enjoyed growing success. Returning to En Calcat in 1958, he found a fruitful source of inspiration in the surrounding nature – the fauna and flora of the Montagne Noire – which resulted in a sustained rhythm of tapestry creation until 1994.
