The first traces of the Saint-Emilion estate date back to the 12th century, with accounts describing the estate as producing prestigious and high-quality wine. It was in 1832, when Jean Jacques Ducasse purchased the estate, that Saint-Emilion wines began to achieve success. The estate remained in the family for more than 150 years. These years were devoted to developing and promoting the estate. In 1852, the "vin de Figeac" was renamed and became "Cheval Blanc." The first medal for Cheval Blanc wine was won in 1862, followed by many others.
The 20th century was marked by significant modernization of the Cheval Blanc estate. Cellar master Gaston Vaissière played a major role, as during his 44 years of service to the company, he cared for the estate as if it were his own child. In 1954, Cheval Blanc wine received the distinction of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, placing it alongside great wines such as Château Margaux and Château d'Yquem. In 1998, Bernard Arnault and Albert Frères purchased the Saint-Emilion estate, injecting new energy while respecting the estate’s traditions.
In 2011, the Cheval Blanc estate underwent a transformation in terms of its facilities, with a new environmentally friendly cellar designed by Christian de Portzamparc. This modern cellar links technology with craftsmanship by creating custom vinification, where each plot of the estate has its own vat. It is key to the purity of Cheval Blanc wine, which is a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Cheval Blanc wine is often featured in our Wines & Spirits auctions at Lyon Brotteaux. A prestigious and excellent wine, it delights the palate at dinners or tastings. We regularly auction Cheval Blanc wines.
