20 th Century Decorative Arts
André Arbus was a French architect, designer, and sculptor. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, he continued his studies in Paris. From 1925, he participated in the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs as well as the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and regularly exhibited at the Salon d'Automne. In 1932, Arbus was awarded the Blumenthal Fellowship and notably presented his works at the 1937 International Exhibition.
Starting in 1932, Arbus championed a return to tradition, in opposition to the modernist movement, advocating for a revival of decorative arts. Combining streamlined designs with luxurious materials such as parchment, vellum, and precious woods, he became a leading figure of Art Deco and French classicism. By integrating traditional principles into his modern creations, he became renowned for his elegant furniture and interiors. Arbus was instrumental in revitalizing French interior design and promoting the role of decorator as a full-fledged profession. His influence can still be felt in contemporary design, where the importance of proportion, harmony, and elegance—hallmarks of his work—remain significant.
Recognized for his contributions to design, architecture, sculpture, and urbanism, Arbus was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1949. The post-war period was particularly fruitful for collaborations, notably with Gilbert Poillerat on furniture adorned with wrought-iron elements, as well as for the Château de Rambouillet, where he contributed to the decoration of the Salle Médicis alongside Raymond Subes. In the 1960s, Arbus worked on numerous design objects and collaborated with the Parisian firm Veronese on a series of glass chandeliers. His body of work, which spanned decades, reflects a continuous pursuit of harmony and beauty, establishing him as a true humanist of his time.
