Beautiful letter evoking Chopin, Dumas and his project for a Faust-Symphonie. [The letter is addressed to the poet and playwright Joseph Autran (1813-1877), a native of Marseille| Liszt set his Quatre Éléments to music. One of Liszt's great reads, Goethe's two Fausts inspired his Faust-Symphonie, essentially composed between August and October 1854, then completed and premiered in Weimar in 1857]. "Thank you, dear friend, for your kind remembrance. I shall read Laboureurs et soldats with the interest and sympathy I attach to your works. After having wandered and sailed so well in your Poèmes de la Mer [a collection published in 1852], it suits you well to make land with the ploughmen - and the idea of your new book seems to me quite happy. I am also grateful to you for remembering my pages on CHOPIN [the F. Chopin essay that Liszt published in 1852] and would send them to you with great pleasure if the French postal service were not rather inaccurate in such commissions and did not require enormous postage. However, as I am anxious that you should have this volume, I have just written two words to Belloni [Gaetano Belloni, Liszt's secretary] (whom you may still remember from Marseilles) to enjoin him to bring it to you, as he has several copies at my disposal. To composer Max SEIFRIZ (1825-1885), court conductor to the Prince of Hechingen, whose concert cantata Ariadne auf Naxos was to be performed at the Musikfest der Tonkünstler-Versammlung (Music Festival of the Musicians' Assembly) in Weimar. Liszt asked Seifriz to send the first part of his Ariadne to Weimar. Unfortunately, Mrs. von Milde [the soprano Rosa von Milde], who is to sing the title role, is not yet back from Carlsbad - but we can count on her musical intelligence and friendly goodwill ("Frau von Milde welcher ich die Titelparthie zugedacht ist leider noch nicht von Carlsbad zurückgekehrt - doch kann man mit Zuversicht auf Ihre musikalische Intelligenz und freundliche Bereitwilligkeit rechnen"). Congratulates him on his work received at the Opéra: "he is now eager to see it performed". He is ready to support him, but "there will be no complacency in my prayer| it will be based entirely on the conviction of all that your talent &amp| your person are worth". Since his return from Paris, "not once have I approached a piano or written a note". He does not wish "this musical lethargy" on Zimmerman. April 12, 1832. He thanks Zimmerman for his kind approaches, but asks him to cancel them. April 12, 1838. He sends Zimmerman the score of his opera Le Duc de Guise (unsuccessfully performed in September 1837): "Cast your eyes over this production, which its ill-fated fate may well make its author's last &amp| be sure that if he has no more musical thoughts to give, he will always be able to express the attachment he begs you to share with your kind and excellent wife". Depuis son retour de Paris, « il ne m'est pas arrivé une fois de m'approcher d'un piano ou d'écrire une note ». Il ne souhaite pas « cette léthargie musicale » à Zimmerman. 12 avril 1832. Il le remercie de ses démarches bienveillantes, mais le prie de les annuler. 12 avril 1838. Il lui envoie la partition de son opéra Le Duc de Guise (qui a été donné sans succès en septembre 1837) : « Jetez les yeux sur cette production que sa mauvaise destinée pourra bien rendre la dernière de son auteur & dites vous bien que s'il n'a plus de pensées musicales à rendre, il aura toujours à exprimer l'attachement dont il vous prie de partager le témoignage avec votre aimable et excellente femme ». 10 octobre 1842. Il a eu un accident et s'est cassé deux côtes, mais il est suffisamment remis pour assister au mariage de Georgina Lefebvre, élève de Zimmerman, qui épouse un jeune homme de Clermont. Marmontel « vous a induit en erreur en vous disant que je retirais ma candidature à l'Institut » | les voici donc concurrents, « mais agissez dans vos intérêts comme si je n'aspirais pas au même honneur »... 2 janvier 1853. Ses rhumatismes le font souffrir, et si Zimmerman a pu trouver un remède à Aix, ses douleurs à lui ont diminué | mais il lui reste « un pied en partie insensible & faible. [Felix Schumann (1854-1879) was the last child of Robert and Clara Schumann| a poet (three of his poems were set to music by Brahms), he died of tuberculosis in Frankfurt on February 16, 1879, at the age of 25]. Very sad things brought him to Mrs. Seligmann and her husband. She had the great pain of seeing her Felix die on the 16th, after indescribable suffering, and, while thanking heaven for having set him free, her heart bled! With him, this richly gifted son, many wonderful hopes were buried, but the hardest thing for her was to see his suffering and not be able to help him. All she has left is the consolation that he was at least able to feel her love every hour. So it will be hard for her to decide to play in public so soon after this catastrophe. If Easter wasn't so close, she would have asked to postpone her performance to a later concert, but that will have to wait until autumn. Nevertheless, she was looking forward to her stay in Koblenz. She would probably go to Düsseldorf in the spring to see her blind friend [her close friend Rosalie Leser (1812-1896)]... "Sehr Trauriges führt mich heute zu Ihnen und Ihrem lieben Mann. [Wilhelm KALLIWODA (1827-1893) was director of the Baden State Orchestra at the Hoftheater in Karlsruhe]. Copies of the most difficult parts for string instruments (together with explanatory texts of the program) left the day before for Karlsruhe (Hoftheater direction). Wagner asked for the violins to be distributed so as to have 12 firsts and 12 seconds. 8 violas, 6 double basses, good! But 6 cellos are not enough. We'd have to add 2 more to get 8. He leaves Prague on Monday evening and will be in Karlsruhe on Tuesday evening. He asks for accommodation at the Hotel Zum Englischen Hof, a salon and a room, perhaps the one occupied by Schnorr [tenor Ludwig Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1836-1865)]. He looks forward to the Karlsruhe performance... Despite a last-minute change of baritone for Wotan's farewell and the Hans Sachs monologues, the concert was a resounding success. Grand Duke insisted, against Wagner's advice, that the concert be repeated on November 19, in the presence of Queen Augusta of Prussia Prussia (the Grand Duke's mother-in-law), but the hall was "almost empty" (Mein Leben). The net proceeds from these two concerts amount to 100 florins, with which the composer buys himself a pelisse. There is a complete rupture between me and your singular uncle [Louis MAME], and no rapprochement is possible. [...] It is Éverat who has been unable to compose, his character being committed. [Louis MAME took Balzac to court for non-delivery of the promised manuscript. Indignant at the procedure, Balzac went to the Barbier printing works and ransacked the composition of Le Médecin de campagne| he was ordered to compensate Mame.
