1930 ANSALDO 15 GS BERLINA LOTTI ° FFVE certificate Chassis n°151001 Short-lived and sought-after brand Noble and powerful engine Exceptional and unique Lotti bodywork Fresh car on the market and in concours d’élégance Unique opportunity to acquire a monument of the Italian car industry Until the 1920s, the Ansaldo factory in Turin specialised in heavy industry, particularly in the manufacture of artillery equipment, aircraft and aeronautical engines. Hence the brand’s logo, made like Hotchkiss in France, of two crossed cannons. Like many companies that had developed in response to the war effort during the First World War, Ansaldo looked for new outlets to continue to feed its production lines. Like Citroën and many other manufacturers, the firm opted for the booming automobile industry. This is how the A4 came into being at the end of 1919. Its 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft proved to be powerful, but the car was heavy and the 3-speed gearbox did not help. Not to mention the Italian economic and political crisis... and the bankruptcy of the bank that owned most of the brand’s shares. In short, the marketing of the A4 was a failure. In 1923, the improved A4 became the 4C, seconded in the range by the 6A, a novelty with a 2-litre 6-cylinder engine. These were soon joined by the sporty 4CS and 6AS versions, with more advanced engines and accessories such as wire wheels. The brand then struggled to renew itself, and it was not the popular Type 10, 14 and 15, built on very utilitarian chassis, that helped its finances. The last heroic effort was the introduction in 1928 of the 15 GS, which, with a new and sublime double overhead camshaft cylinder head, allowed the in-house 4-cylinder engine to develop 60 hp.  The next two models, the Type 2 8-cylinder and Type 18 6-cylinder, were released in the midst of the 1929 crisis and ended up pushing the Turin firm towards inevitable bankruptcy... The car we are presenting, from the unmissable Anna-Lisa collection, is exceptional in many ways. First of all, it is one of the very few survivors of this confidential brand, and one of the even rarer 15 GS still in existence. With its double overhead camshaft engine worthy of the best productions of the time, our 15 GS sports car was also lucky enough to receive a sublime light bodywork by Lotti. If this Florentine coachbuilder is not well known today, he was one of the regular “dressers” of Ansaldo and Nazzaro chassis and - above all - the inventor of a light body on steel frame (no more traditional wood frame), a mix of the much later Weymann and Superleggera Touring processes. According to a letter dated 1991 from Carrozzeria Lotti, this car is unique... Restored at the end of the 1980s and beginning of the 1990s (invoices from Lecoq for the bodywork!), this exceptional car was also entered in the highly sought-after Louis Vuitton Concours d’élégance – Automobiles Classiques, in 1991, at Bagatelle. Never seen since, and requiring an easy restart, this Lotti Tipo 15 GS light sedan is just waiting to be driven and presented in the most beautiful classic events, where it will not fail to attract the attention of the most discerning connoisseurs.

Comme beaucoup d’entreprises s’étant développées pour répondre à l’effort de guerre pendant le premier conflit mondial, Ansaldo cherche de nouveaux débouchés pour continuer à alimenter ses chaînes de production. Comme Citroën et beaucoup de constructeurs, la firme opte pour l’automobile, en plein essor. C’est ainsi que la A4 voit le jour à la fin de l’année 1919. Sans parler de la crise économique et politique italienne… Et de la faillite de la banque qui détient la majeure partie des actions de la marque. Bref, la commer - cialisation de l’A4 est un échec. En 1923, la A4 améliorée devient 4C, secondée dans la gamme pare l 6A, une nouveauté à moteur 6-cylindres 2 l. Rapidement épaulées par des versions sportives 4CS et 6AS, avec des moteurs plus poussées et des accessoires à l’avenant, comme des roues fils. La marque a ensuite du mal à se renouveler, et ce ne sont pas les populaires Type 10, 14 et 15, construit sur des châssis au dessin très uti - litaire, qui aident à la bonne santé des finances. Ultime soubresaut héroïque : la présentation en 1928 de la 15 GS qui, avec une inédite et sublime culasse à double arbre à cames en tête, permet au 4-cylindres maison de développer 60 ch. Les deux modèles suivants, Type 2 8-cylindres et Type 18 6-cylindres, sortis en pleine crise de 1929 finissent de précipiter la firme de Turin vers une inéluctable faillite… La voiture que nous vous présentons, issue de l’incontournable collection Anna-Lisa, est excep - tionnelle à plus d’un titre. C’est tout d’abord l’une des rarissimes survivantes de cette marque confi - dentielle, et l’une des encore plus rares 15 GS encore existantes. Avec son moteur à double arbre à cames en tête digne des meilleures productions du moment, notre sportive 15 GS eut aussi la chance de recevoir une sublime carrosserie légère signée Lotti. Si ce carrossier florentin est aujourd’hui méconnu, ce fuit pour - tant l’un des « habilleurs » attitrés des châssis Ansaldo et Nazzaro et – surtout – l’inventeur d’une caisse légère sur armature acier (exit la traditionnelle ossature bois), mix des procédés Weymann et Superleggera Touring bien plus tardifs. Selon un courrier daté de 1991 et émanant de la Carrozzeria Lotti, cette voiture est unique…  Restaurée fin des années 1980 début des années 1990 (factures de chez Lecoq pour la carrosserie !), cette exceptionnelle auto fut également inscrite au très couru Concours d’élégance Louis Vuitton – Automobiles Classiques, en 1991, à Bagatelle. Jamais vue depuis, et demandant une remise en route facile, cette Tipo 15 GS berline légère Lotti ne demande qu’à rouler, et être présentée dans les plus beaux événements classiques, où elle ne manquera pas de susciter l’attention des plus fins connaisseurs.

He is particularly famous for the tuning of 4 CV engines. In 1950, he entered his first “tank” in the 24 Hours of Le Mans| unfortuna - tely, this experience resulted in a withdrawal at the 16th hour following an engine failure. He is back in Le Mans in 1955, with a new realization, the 750 Sport. This small car is equipped with a superb aluminium bodywork, associated with a tubular chassis. Under the hood is a 4 CV 750cc engine optimized in the Ferry style. This engine is associated with a 5-speed Claude gearbox. Its very limited weight and its sharp mechanics give it amazing performances since it reaches up to 210 km/h. Unfortunately, it will not be able to demonstrate its full potential at Le Mans because it is retained as a substitute due to a late registration. Some say that René Bonnet put pressure on the organizers in order to favor his DB. In 1956, our 750 Sport made its return to the Mille Miglia, but its driver, Jacques Blaché, unfortuna - tely did not make it to the finish line following a road accident near Rome. The car was repa - triated to France where it was repaired in order to continue its season. It will shine in particular in the 1000 km of Paris where it finishes second of its category or in the 12 Hours of Reims where it wins its class and finishes 3rd in the scratch of the 1500 category. It also won two class victories at the Coupe d’Automne and Coupe du Salon. In 1957, it was sold to John Green, the Renault importer in California. It met with some success in competition with Jim Parkinson at the wheel who had several victories to his credit. Its performance was such that the other competitors asked twice for the car to be checked to see if its displacement was correct. The car was then bought by a museum and disappeared from the radar screens for several decades. In the early 2000s, it was saved in extremis from destruction by James Peacock, an American collector who bought the car and undertook its restoration. Il s’illustre notamment dans la préparation des moteurs de 4 CV. En 1950, il engage son premier « tank» aux 24 Heures du Mans | cette expérience se soldera malheureusement par un abandon à la 16 e heure suite à une casse moteur. Il est de retour en terre mancelle en 1955, avec une nouvelle réalisation, la 750 Sport. Cette barquette est dotée d’une superbe carrosserie en aluminium profilée, associée à un châssis tubulaire. Sous le capot on retrouve un bloc moteur de 4 CV de 750 cm³ optimisé à la sauce Ferry. Ce dernier est associé à une boite de vitesse Claude à cinq rapports. Son poids très contenu et sa mécanique affutée lui confèrent des perfor - mances stupéfiantes puisqu’elle atteint jusqu’à 210 km/h. Elle ne pourra malheureusement pas démontrer tout son potentiel au Mans car elle est retenue comme suppléante en raison d’une inscription tardive. Certains diront que René Bonnet a mis la pression sur les organisateurs afin de favoriser ses DB.   En 1956, notre 750 Sport fait son retour aux Mille Miglia, mais son pilote, Jacques Blaché, ne ralliera malheureusement pas l’arrivée suite à une sortie de route dans les environs de Rome. La voiture est rapatriée en France où elle sera réparée afin de poursuivre sa saison. Elle brillera notamment au 1000 km de Paris où elle termine deuxième de sa catégorie ou encore aux 12 Heures de Reims où elle remporte sa classe et termine 3 e au scratch de la catégorie 1500. On notera également deux victoires de classe aux Coupe d’Automne et Coupe du Salon. En 1957, elle est vendue à John Green l’impor - tateur Renault de Californie. Elle rencontre un certain succès en compétition avec Jim Parkinson à son volant qui compte plusieurs victoires à son actif. Ses performances sont telles que les autres concurrents demanderont à deux reprises que la voiture soit contrôlée afin de vérifier la conformité de sa cylindrée. La voiture est ensuite achetée par un musée puis disparait des écrans radars pendant plusieurs décennies. Au début des années 2000, elle est sauvée in extremis de la destruction par James Peacock, un collectionneur américain qui rachète la voi - ture et entreprend sa restauration. La coque étant trop abimée, une reconstruction totale est inévitable. Devant l’ampleur des travaux et leur coût prohibitif, il est contraint de revendre la voiture. La nouvelle arrive aux oreilles de Jean-Marie Fresnault qui s’en porte acquéreur. En 2005, la voiture revient ainsi sur le sol fran - çais, où sa restauration sera menée à son terme. Notre barquette, unique au monde, se trouve aujourd’hui dans un excellent état, équipé d’un moteur 4 CV refait chez Ferry Développement, et d’une boîte 4-vitesses. Cette sublime auto au palmarès international et aux performances étonnantes constitue un ticket d’entrée excep - tionnel aux plus grandes manifestations, dont les Mille Miglia et le Mans Classic.

After the small and agile Cooper 500, the constructor will build single-seaters for all categories, from F3 to F2, to F1, including Formula Junior. The adventure will be crowned by the titles of World Champion of the manufacturers in F1 in 1959 and 1960. In Formula Junior, a very popular series between 1958 and 1964, which temporarily replaced the F3 and F2 championships, and which saw the emergence of drivers such as Jim Clark, John Surtees, Jochen Rindt, Jo Schlesser and Lorenzo Bandini, the British chassis manufacturer pro - duced three models in succession. While the first two Cooper FJs, T52s and T56s were derived from existing F1 and F2 cars, John Cooper decided to build an entirely new Formula Junior for the 1962 season. The chassis was narrower and much improved compared to the previous versions, with disc brakes as well. About 30 T59s were built, and one of them, named AIden Cooper, was modified to race in F1, with a Coventry Climax FPF 1500 engine. The Anglo-American driver Ian Burgess took the start of the Grand Prix of Great Britain, Germany and Italy... The car we offer is exceptional, as it was origi - nally powered by a Coventry Climax FPF 1500, to allow Patsy Burt, the most successful British female driver of the post-war period, to com - pete in hill-climbing races. It also sported a “Burt Blue” color, a requirement of its talented driver, as a reminder of the Jaguar XK 120 of her debut. In 1961, she became the first British driver to compete in a full season of the European hillclimb championship, and over the course of her long and prolific career, she would go on to win 43 scratch races, 151 women’s prizes, and set 8 international records. This Lotus T59 1500, conforming to the F1 regulations of the time, was like her other cars, impeccably prepared by her engineer – and long-time companion – Ron Smith. Bought as a kit, the chassis was numbered CPMB163: C for Christmas (name of the mechanic), PMB for the name of the garage where it was assembled, 1 for chassis number 1, and 63 for the year of construction. Patsy Burt will race with this very powerful Lotus until 1964, signing some nice performances in England and in Switzerland in particular (Course de Cote d’Ollon-Villars). The car quickly became a col - lector’s item and, equipped with a BMC 1100 engine, raced in the historic Formula Junior Championship. In the years 1980-1990, it is given in its original configuration, and equipped with an FPF 1500 engine remanufactured by Crosthwaite & Gardiner, to run in F1, in the famous races organized by the Historic Grand Prix Car Association. The next owner of this very historic Cooper will only have to renew the PTH to race again, for a reasonable budget, in the middle of mythical F1 cars of the 1960s.

Il arborait aussi une couleur «Burt Blue », exigence de sa talentueuse pilote, en souvenir de la Jaguar XK 120 de ses débuts. En 1961, elle est devenue la première pilote britannique à participer à une saison com - plète du championnat européen de la montagne et, au cours de sa longue et prolifique carrière, elle remportera 43 courses au scratch, 151 prix féminins, et décrochera 8 records internationaux. Cette Lotus T59 1500, conforme à la réglemen - tation F1 de l’époque, était comme ses autres montures, impeccablement préparée par son ingénieur – et compagnon de longue date – Ron Smith. La voiture entre rapidement en collection et, équipée d’un moteur BMC 1100, roule en Championnat historique de Formule Junior. Dans les années 1980 - 1990, elle est remise dans sa configuration d’origine, et équipée d’un moteur FPF 1500 refabriqué par Crosthwaite & Gardiner, pour courir en F1, dans les fameuses courses organisées par la Historic Grand Prix Car Association. Le prochain propriétaire de cette Cooper très historique n’aura qu’à renouveler le PTH pour à nouveau s’aligner, pour un budget raisonnable, en course, au milieu de F1 mythiques des années 1960.

After revision, 10878 is equipped with another Mignotet engine, this time a 1600 developed on the basis of the Renault R8 Gordini. This is the most advanced evolution of this engine by the Levallois-based tuner. Thus equipped, it was entered in the 1969 Neige et Glace with the crew Jean-Claude Andruet - Jean Todt. Contrairement au 1 300 S équipées du 1 296 cm 3, 10878 va pouvoir grâce à ce moteur, s’aligner en prototype Gr. 6. Et justement, c’est l’idée de Jacques Cheinisse, patron du service course Alpine, qui décide d’engager au Monte-Carlo 1969 trois voitures en Gr. 3, pour Vinatier, Andruet et Lusénius, et une en Gr. 6 pour Nicolas. Pour une ques - tion de règlement, le Gr. 6 est rebaptisé Rallye Mediterranée, mais se déroule dans le flot du Monte Carlo « classique ». Dès le départ, Nicolas, copilote par Roure, prend la deuxième place en Gr. 6, derrière la Lancia Fulvia de Kallstrom. Le reste du Rallye voit l’équipage signer quelques scratchs (quatre, toutes catégories confondues !) et podiums, mais rien n’y fait, et malgré ces coups d’éclat, quelques soucis l’empêchent de monter sur la première marche. Après révision, 10878 est équipée d’un autre moteur Mignotet, cette fois ci un 1600 élaboré sur la base du Renault R8 Gordini. Il s’agit de l’évolution la plus poussée de ce moteur par le préparateur de Levallois. Ainsi pourvue, elle est engagée au Neige et Glace 1969 avec l’équipage Jean-Claude Andruet – Jean Todt. Comme à son habitude, Andruet ne fait quasiment pas de reconnaissances et va connaitre... dix sorties de route ! La dernière amènera l’équipage à abandonner. La Berlinette immatriculée 7749 GH 76 est donc rapatriée à Dieppe puis livrée au service VO (véhicules d’occasions) afin qu’elle soit réparée, reconditionnée (exit le moteur Mignotet) et vendue. Elle entame ainsi sa vie « civile » en janvier 1970, aux mains de Claude Swietlik, qui l’engage au Rallye des Routes du Nord… où il est contraint à l’abandon suite à un accident. Il s’inscrit ensuite au Critérium Alpin, mais a un nouvel accident, et finit sur le toit! La Berlinette est vendue en l’état à un garagiste de Valence, qui va la répare et participer à son volant à quelques courses de côtes locales. La voiture change encore trois fois de mains jusqu’en 1983, lorsqu’un certain Antoine Milesi s’en porte acquéreur. C’est lui qui remet la voiture en conformité « usine », avec un moteur 1440 vrai - semblablement élaboré par Ferry. Sur environ soixante Alpine 1100, 1300 ou 1440 engagées par l’usine de 1963 à 1970, seulement huit ont conservées leur châssis, caisse et carte grise d’origine. 10878 en fait partie. La voiture est vendue avec la plaque de rallye authentique du Monte Carlo 1969, offerte par Jean Pierre Nicolas.

Despite its sporty qualities and its unequalled beauty, the Vallelunga, produced in about fifty copies, will not be a great commercial success.  However, its price of 3.5 million lire is very close to that of a Lancia Flaminia Supersport Zagato, and half that of a Ferrari 250 GT berlinetta. The famous British colonel Ronnie Hoare, who was the Ferrari importer in England, wished for a more powerful engine| his wish was granted by the brand with the optional Ford-Lotus DOHC 1600. With 135 hp and a 5-speed gearbox, the performance, handling and style of this car were rare at the time. It is estimated that only twenty Vallelungas have survived. The confidential production of the model means that no two examples are alike. The car illustrated in these pages is particularly interesting, as it was built on chassis number VLD 1611, the suffix D – for destra – indicating a rare right-hand drive version. It is also the “Competition” version, originally equipped with the Ford-Lotus twin cam engine. It was discovered in England, in a test of the Autosport magazine published in November 1965, then in the hands of the driver Rob Lamplough. It was then exported to Australia where it remained until 2014, when it returned to Europe. Après quelques autos exclusivement destinées à la course, il décide de se lancer dans la construction de voitures de route, en partena - riat avec Ford. Le géant de Détroit, qui n’a pas pu acheter Ferrari, souhaite en effet se venger, et tente d’aller concurrencer il Commendatore sur son propre terrain. La première voiture de route apparaît en 1964. Baptisée Vallelunga, il s’agit d’abord d’une barquette sportive, suivie l’année suivante par un coupé carrossé par Fissore. Si les trois premiers prototypes sont en aluminium avec bloc arrière basculant, les exemplaires suivants, de série, sont en fibre de verre avec lunette traditionnelle. Construite avec un savoir-faire acquis en compétition, la nouvelle venue se distingue par une conception auda - cieuse et avant-gardiste. Après la sublime ATS, développée par Carlo Chiti et Romolo Tavoni, tansfuges de chez Ferrari, avec le soutien fi - nancier du Comte Volpi, il s’agit de la deuxième voiture de série à moteur central. Elle bénéficie d’un châssis hyper élaboré, couplé à un système de suspension léger et rigide directement dérivé de celui de la Formule 3 de la marque. Sous le capot arrière, on retrouve donc un moteur Ford, en l’occurrence un Kent 1500 dérivé de la série. Malgré ses qualités sportives et son inégalable beauté, la Vallelunga, produite à une cinquan - taine d’exemplaires, ne sera pas un grand succès commercial. Pourtant, son prix de 3,5 millions de lires, est très proche de celui d’une Lancia Flaminia Supersport Zagato, et deux fois moindre que celui d’une Ferrari 250 GT berlinette. Le célèbre colonel britannique Ronnie Hoare, notam - ment importateur Ferrari en Angleterre, émettra le souhait de disposer d’un moteur plus puissant | vœu exaucé par la marque avec la monte, en option, du moteur Ford-Lotus 1600 double ACT. Avec 135 ch et une boîte 5-vitesses, le ramage sera à la hauteur du plumage, l’ensemble offrant des performance, une tenue de route et un style rare pour l’époque. On estime qu’une vingtaine seulement de Vallelunga ont survécu. La production confiden - tielle du modèle fait qu’aucun des exemplaires recensés n’est semblable à un autre. La voiture qui illustre ces pages est particulièrement intéres - sante, puisque construite sur le châssis numéro VLD 1611, le suffixe D – pour destra – indiquant une rarissime version à conduite à droite. Il s’agit par ailleurs de la version « Compétition », équipée d’origine du moteur Ford-Lotus twin cam. On la découvre en Angleterre, dans un essai du magazine Autosport paru en novembre 1965, puis aux mains du pilote Rob Lamplough. Elle sera ensuite exportée en Australie où elle restera jusqu’en 2014, année où elle reviendra en Europe. C’est à ce moment-là qu’elle bénéficiera de soins cosmétiques et mécaniques (factures de 7 000 € jointes au dossier), permettant un usage optimal de cet authentique pur-sang.
