"I was quite sure that Chopin was ill", and she was preparing to go to Paris. "Mrs. Marliani's letters had reassured me, and yet without making me feel calm. So there's my poor little one coughing, spitting, sleeping badly, or not sleeping at all, and all this without me being there to console him or dorelotter him, I can see that our friends are treating him, but it's not the same thing. My cares relieve him, those of others make him impatient. And you too, poor Bouli, you're sick, cold, feverish? Here I am sadder and more worried ... But it is difficult to hasten his departure, because it is necessary to find a suitable place in the stagecoaches| and then there is the lease of the farm to be made, so that Polite (his half-brother) gives up his management: "His tenant farmer is rascal, and he is absurd. His rent would accumulate by delays, and he would do me a considerable wrong after 3 years without that preventing him from ruining himself, on the contrary. Longue lettre à son fils s'inquiétant de la santé de Chopin. «J'étais bien sûre que Chopin était malade», et elle se préparait à aller à Paris. «Les lettres de Mme Marliani m'avaient rassurée, et sans me rendre tranquille pourtant. Ainsi voilà mon pauvre petit toussant, crachant, dormant mal, ou ne dormant pas, et tout cela sans que je sois là pour le consoler ou le dorelotter, je vois bien que nos amis le soignent mais ce n'est pas la même chose. Mes soins le soulagent, ceux des autres l'impatientent. Et toi aussi, pauvre Bouli, tu es malade, enrhumé, fiévrotteux ? Me voilà plus triste et plus inquiète»... Mais il est difficile de hâter son départ, car il faut trouver une place convenable dans les diligences| et puis il y a le bail de la ferme à faire, pour que Polite (son demi-frère) renonce à sa gestion: «Son métayer est fripon, et lui absurde. Ses fermages s'accumuleraient par les retards, et il me ferait au bout de 3 ans un tort considérable sans que cela l'empêchât de se ruiner tout au contraire. C'est donc un grand service à lui rendre que de le débarrasser de tout cela. Mais l'en débarrasser vite et bien, et sans perdre beaucoup au marché, n'est pas facile»... Quant à sa fille Solange, «je voudrais bien la garder, si elle continuait à être aussi aimable à Paris, qu'elle l'est ici. Mais il faudra voir ! D'ailleurs il me faudrait bien un ou deux mois pour lui organiser une résidence possible auprès de nous, et pendant ces préparatifs elle perdrait son temps. Il faudrait que tu lui cèdes tes chambres et que tu trouves un logement dans la maison. SAND George (1804-1876) L.A.S. "G. Sand", Nohant January 21, 1862, to Elme CARO| 4 pages and a half in-8 to his number. Long letter in favor of his niece Léontine Simonnet and her grandnephews. She asks for "help and protection for my niece. Here I am being nepotistic, you see? but I believe my niece has many rights. Her husband killed himself for the empire. To the letter. In '48 and '49 he took so much fire to destroy the republic that he died of exhaustion and unrest. The empire was his passion, his ideal. It wasn't mine. He had a falling out with me. God grant him peace! But he left a lovely widow who is my brother's daughter and three children whom I love dearly. The little woman had enormous courage to raise these three sons, one of whom is now a big boy with a heart of gold". She has "rights to the protection of the government, its scarce resources, its forced spending, and finally the state of embarrassment and peril in which she finds herself". But G. Sand wants to know if her plea has any chance of succeeding. "I know that the Minister of Education likes to do good, and perhaps he knows, on his side, that some dissenters in opinion can be very honest people and very grateful hearts. Moreover, I plead here for the children of a man who could not have been reproached in the same way I was, and whether for his sake or because of your kind support, I will nonetheless, very sincerely and effortlessly, take upon myself a large part of the debt of gratitude that the minister will owe us".... SAND George (1804-1876) L.A.S. «G. Sand», Nohant 21 janvier 1862, à Elme CARO| 4 pages et demie in-8 à son chiffre. Longue lettre en faveur de sa nièce Léontine Simonnet et de ses petits-neveux. Elle demande «aide et protection pour ma nièce. Me voilà faisant du népotisme, voyez-vous ? mais je crois que ma nièce a bien des droits. Son mari s'est tué pour l'empire. C'est à la lettre. En 48 et 49 il a pris tellement feu pour détruire la république qu'il en est mort de fatigue et d'agitation. L'empire était sa passion, son idéal. Ce n'était pas le mien. Il s'est brouillé avec moi. Que Dieu lui fasse paix ! Mais il a laissé une veuve charmante qui est la fille de mon frère et trois enfans que j'aime tendrement. La petite femme a eu un énorme courage pour élever ces trois fils dont un est maintenant grand garçon, un coeur d'or». Elle a des «droits à la protection du gouvernement, ses faibles ressources, ses dépenses forcées, enfin l'état de gêne et de péril où elle se trouve». Mais G. Sand voudrait savoir si sa supplique a des chances d'aboutir. «Je sais que le ministre de l'instruction publique aime à faire le bien, et peut-être sait-il, de son côté, que certains dissidents en matière d'opinion peuvent être de très honnêtes gens et des coeurs très reconnaissants. D'ailleurs je plaide ici pour les enfans d'un homme à qui l'on n'eut pas pu faire les mêmes reproches qu'à moi, et, que ce soit par égard pour lui, ou grâce à votre bienveillant appui, je n'en prendrai pas moins à ma charge, très sincèrement et sans effort une bonne part de la dette de reconnaissance que nous fera contracter le ministre»... Moving letter on the death of his grandson Marc (July 21, 1864). "The death of this poor child was so painful that we were broken by it, I in turn, seeing the pain and fatigue of my children, for I arrived at Guillery the day after the death. I was able to support my children in this terrible crisis, and set them on a journey of distraction that the heat made even more painful than pleasant. They are currently in Ronjoux, in Savoie, at Buloz's house, [...] but Maurice does not console himself. Lina bore the blow better. Providence wants it this way, the mother instinctively feels her mission for the future. I don't say anything and I don't want to say anything about myself. I don't even want to know what harm it does to me: what's the point? It's a tearing where conscience has nothing to do with it. I know well that there is no death, and in all that belief and reasoning can answer each other, I have always given feeling a greater power than demonstration. So I believe as much and more than ever that death is not an abomination and that my child is right where he is. But to lose him is a suffering for us and an immense sorrow if we compare it to the short duration of our life. It is not in proportion and we have to endure this law, the same for all those who see the objects of their affection leave. Émouvante lettre sur la mort de son petit-fils Marc (21 juillet 1864). «La mort de ce pauvre enfant a été si douloureuse que nous en avons été brisés, moi par contrecoup, en voyant la douleur et la fatigue de mes enfants, car je suis arrivée à Guillery le lendemain de la mort. J'ai pu soutenir mes enfans dans cette crise terrible, et les mettre en route pour un voyage de distraction que la chaleur leur rend encore plus pénible qu'agréable. Ils sont en ce moment, à Ronjoux, en Savoie, chez Buloz, [...] mais Maurice ne se console pas. Lina a mieux supporté le coup. La providence le veut ainsi, la mère sent instinctivement sa mission d'avenir. Moi je ne dis rien et ne veux rien dire de moi. Je ne veux même pas savoir le mal que cela me fait: à quoi bon ? C'est un déchirement où la conscience n'a rien à voir. Je sais bien qu'il n'y a pas de mort, et dans tout ce que la croyance et le raisonnement peuvent se répondre l'un à l'autre, j'ai toujours donné au sentiment une puissance plus grande qu'à la démonstration. Donc je crois autant et plus que jamais que la mort n'est pas un abime et que mon enfant est bien là où il est. Mais le perdre est une souffrance pour nous et un chagrin immense si on le compare au peu de durée de notre vie. Cela n'est pas en proportion et il faut subir cette loi, la même pour tous ceux qui voient partir les objets de leur affection. Sand evokes first of all vigorously THIERS' speech in favor of the Pope and against Italian unity [to which Flaubert had reacted: "Can one see a more triumphant imbecile, a more abject boor, a more bourgeois strangeness! It could only have been you, friend of my heart. Etroniform is the sublime word that classifies this species of merdoid plants. I have comrades and good boys who prostrate themselves before any symptom of opposition, whoever he is and wherever he comes from, and for whom this idealess acrobat is a God. They have had their tails down since that big band speech. They are beginning to think that it is going a bit far, and perhaps it is a good thing that, in order to conquer parliamentary royalty, the comedian has emptied his rag bag, his dead cats and his cabbage cores in front of everyone. This will educate some. Yes, you'll do well to dissect this balloon soul and spider web talent! "My dear child, you have gone to a lot of trouble to get us a good housekeeper [...] But she does not fulfill our goal and it is nobody's fault, not even hers, I think, for she is a very sweet girl and without moral defect as far as I know. But she is not endowed with the skills necessary for a well-kept household and for regular and expected service. She is not lively, she is absent-minded, she does not like, I think, such duties, or she does not have the strength for them, or she does not like to bother with them, and for the price we give her, we would have two maids in the country who would do neither better nor worse. We wanted to give her time to turn around, to try and get used to it, and time did not bring any progress. ... We will give her all the time she needs to find a good place for herself, and if you find a good place for her on your side, do something about it. We shall have only excellent testimonies to give of her character, her delicacy and her work as a maid proper. The tidying up, the table service, the sweeping and the feather duster are not her business, she is a lady. If she wasn't in your house, she has become one, and she can very well find her job on that footing in a rich house. We don't have that job at home, where you have to be a bit of a duster... And then Sand asks, "And what do you do? Where are your work and your hopes in this time of musical barbarism we live in?"... Au sujet d'une domestique. «Mon cher enfant, vous vous êtes donné bien de la peine pour nous avoir une bonne gouvernante [...] Mais elle ne remplit pas notre but et ce n'est la faute de personne, pas même la sienne, je pense, car c'est une très douce fille et sans défaut moral que je sache. Mais elle n'est pas douée des aptitudes nécessaires à un ménage bien tenu et à un service régulier et prévu. Elle n'est pas vive, elle est distraite, elle n'aime pas je crois ce genre de fonctions ou elle n'en a pas la force, ou elle n'aime pas à se donner un peu de peine enfin elle n'y arrive pas, et pour le prix que nous lui donnons, nous aurions deux bonnes du pays qui ne feraient ni mieux ni pire. Nous avons voulu lui donner le temps de se retourner, de s'essayer et de s'habituer, et le temps n'a amené aucun progrès. [...] Nous lui donnerons tout le temps nécessaire pour se placer bien, et si, de votre côté vous trouvez une bonne place pour elle, agissez. Où en sont vos travaux et vos espérances dans ce temps de barbarie musicale où nous vivons ?»... Elle ajoute, à propos de sa belle-fille Lina et de la bonne: «Lina se couche à 11 h. et se lève à 6. Jeanne est libre de se coucher à 9 h. et elle se lève à 8. [...] Lina est très bonne, mais elle se fatigue trop, et nous ne voulons pas»....

"It is the king who has made us happy for ten short months of our life, it is poor France that I still love without knowing almost to whom to address this feeling. Two men politically have abandoned our liberal party, which had more victims than defectors, but of these two, it is Benjamin [CONSTANT] who inspires the highest degree of irritation in me. As for me, you will not believe me, I hope I go to Paris despite all the seductions that are used to attract me there. I am staying here. I am at least suspending my daughter's marriage and I will leave this hyver to Greece and Jerusalem if all is not finished. One has to go to the Holy Land to be farther from the unholy land, and yet it is our country!" She gives news: "Mr de LA FAYETTE and Mr de BROGLIE were offered to be even and they refused. Deux hommes politiquement ont abandonné notre parti libéral qui comptoit plus de victimes que de transfuges mais de ces deux c'est Benjamin [CONSTANT] qui m'inspire le plus haut degré d'irritation. Je voudrois le roi en Suisse dans un pays neutre environné de Suisses qu'on est accoutumé à regarder comme des François. Enfin c'est l'opinion qu'il importe de conquérir. La guerre est chose aisée mais après elle il reste toujours 24 millions d'hommes dont plus de la moitié a le coeur ulcéré. "Ronald Tolkien", "Toller" or "JRRT", Oxford 1953- 1966, to George SAYER| 13 pages in-8 at his address 76 Sandfield Road, Hedington, Oxford, 2 headings Professor J.R.R. Tolkien| in English. Interesting letters to his former pupil and friend about the edition of The Lord of the Rings. George SAYER (1914-2005) was head of the English Department at Malvern College. In August 1952 Tolkien visited his friend in Malvern, and Sayer recorded Tolkien reading excerpts from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, whose typescript he had lent to Sayer| the trilogy The Lord of the Rings was published in London, by George Allen and Unwin, in 1954 and 1955]. April 28, 1953. He was late in thanking Sayer, but he was in a pitiful state, having sent the first two books on April 11, 17 days late in relation to the contract, which left him few days to prepare for his conference in Glasgow . He did, however, send Sayer's essay to Allen and Unwin, with some additional notes| they replied that their advertising department would make use of it. What use, he does not know. He is deeply grateful to him, and blushes: it was a lot to ask of him, a hard job... June 24, 1953. He's typing with a typewriter, and his hand hurts. He has been very busy with administrative and academic duties, including visiting the farms belonging to Merton College, and he cannot yet choose dates for a stay in Malvern... It was in 1886 that Verlaine published his Memoirs of a Widower (Léon Vanier, 1866), while his ex-wife, Mathilde Mauté, remarried on October 30, 1886. This "Epitaph" was to appear at the head of the book, as shown by the title Mémoires d'un veuf (Memoirs of a Widower) crossed out in the upper right-hand corner of our manuscript, but was removed from it| it was published in 1929, with variants, in volume II of the Posthumous Works. Inscribed in a cross, like a tombstone, it is like an epitaph to the former wife. "Here lies who was a daughter of whom nothing is said, a vague wife, an unconscious mother. In her lifetime she was called: THE CERTAMENTAL PRINCESS She almost put two men [Verlaine and Rimbaud] to the test. Why did she do that? Was harmful to poets. Who was it bad for? Spent the rest of her days visiting, partying and dancing with perverted bourgeois. Faith was indifferent to him, Hope unknown and Charity a dead letter. Kleptomaniac, moreover. She died an absurd death, without the sign of the Cross, but in her shadow, for the Mercy of God is infinite." Cette «Épitaphe» devait figurer en tête du livre, comme le montre le titre Mémoires d'un veuf biffé dans le coin supérieur droit de notre manuscrit, mais en fut retirée| elle fut publiée en 1929, avec variantes, au tome II des OEuvres posthumes. However, my general health is good - and, outside, a number of benevolent articles seem to augur well for my future publications - my worksites are full - some financial support from the editors and, if possible, in the meantime, from the editorial staff. I am still counting on your benevolent efforts on my behalf for the "collocation" of my eventual honourable asylum and small disguised households, if misfortune should pursue me to this point in this year which is now beginning". He fears that a new doctor will have him "dislodged sooner than I would like for my financial convenience". He won't have money until April-May. "Vanier will only have between 200 and 250 francs in my favour by then. A few articles here and there, news or verses, will be able to increase this modest sum a little, and with courage ! But by any chance, or rather against any chance, I will try to stay here as much as possible". He wrote about this to Dr. Jullien. Published in La Plume on October 1, 1892, under the title Confiance, this poem of six quatrains was republished the following year, untitled, in Odes in his honor (Exhibit XIX). It presents a variant of the text in the third line, and a few others of punctuation. "They tell me that you are deceiving me. Working manuscripts of two poems. For Miss D... A... [Diane Andrée, friend of Cazals and Verlaine], sonnet published in the enlarged edition of Dédicaces (Vanier, 1894), room XC. The manuscript is marked "Varia" in the margin, and Verlaine added a "tout" to the 2nd and 4th lines of the first quatrain| a variant is found in the penultimate line. "I love you too much, Andrée, At trot and at a gallop. You're my beloved at a gallop and at a trot."... "And this is the moment when you die"... First draft and working draft of a poem published in La Revue parisienne of November 25, 1893 (Le Livre posthume - Fragments, V) and collected in 1903 in Le Livre posthume des OEuvres posthumes (Librairie Léon Vanier, A. Messein, 1903). It consists of six quatrains| the first seven verses were written in ink, the rest in pencil, with numerous erasures and corrections. In the margin at the bottom, Verlaine has drawn a little soldier (or policeman) in graphite. In the top margin, Albert Messein has inscribed a certificate of authenticity. Manuscrits de travail de deux poèmes. Pour Mlle D... A... [Diane Andrée, amie de Cazals et Verlaine], sonnet publié dans l'édition augmentée de Dédicaces (Vanier, 1894), pièce XC. Le manuscrit porte en marge la mention «Varia», et Verlaine a ajouté un «tout» aux 2e et 4e vers du premier quatrain| on relève une variante à l'avant-dernier vers. «Je vous aime trop, Andrée, Au trot tout comme au galop. Vous êtes mon adorée Au galop tout comme au trot»... «Et voici l'instant où tu meurs»... Brouillon de premier jet et de travail d'un poème publié dans La Revue parisienne du 25 novembre 1893 (Le Livre posthume - Fragments, V) et recueilli en 1903 dans Le Livre posthume des OEuvres posthumes (Librairie Léon Vanier, A. Messein, 1903). Il compte six quatrains| les 7 premiers vers ont été écrits à l'encre, le reste au crayon, avec de nombreuses ratures et corrections. Dans la marge en bas, Verlaine a dessiné à la mine de plomb un petit soldat (ou policeman). Dans la marge en haut, Albert Messein a inscrit un certificat d'authenticité. «Et voici, l'instant où tu meurs Nuit suprême en ma nuit extrême Deuil de deuils, malheur de malheurs Il me semble mourir encor moi-même»...

"Jules Verne", Amiens 10 January 1900, [to General Henri Joseph BRUGÈRE]| 1 page in-8 "In memory of the few reports we had when you commanded the 2nd Corps in Amiens", he intervened on behalf of his son-in-law M. de FRANCY, 1st class subintendent in residence in Besançon: "the climate of this city is detestable for his wife and daughter who cannot live there in winter". He would like a change of residence, and currently a place is vacant in Orléans: "May I ask you for a recommendation from your friends at the War Ministry"...

VERNE Jules (1828-1905). L.A.S. «Jules Verne», Amiens 10 janvier 1900, [au général Henri Joseph BRUGÈRE]| 1 page in-8. «En souvenir des quelques rapports que nous avons eus lorsque vous commandiez le 2e Corps à Amiens», il intervient en faveur de son gendre M. de FRANCY, sous-intendant de 1ère classe en résidence à Besançon: «le climat de cette ville est détestable pour sa femme et sa fille qui ne peuvent l'habiter l'hiver». Il souhaiterait un changement de résidence, et actuellement une place est vacante à Orléans: «Puis-je vous demander une recommandation près de vos amis du Ministère de la Guerre»...

"Voltaire", Ferney December 6, 1771| 1 page in-4: "I thank you and I return to you the book of nature [De la Philosophie de la Nature, ou Traité de morale pour l'espèce humaine tiré de la philosophie et fondé sur la nature, 1770, by DELISLE DE SALES?] It seems to me to be made like her| a mixture of good and evil. Your conversation is not in this case, and since there are evils in nature and in very great number, one of mine is in truth sir to have known you too late. Deign to pass through my cottage again in your travels. Would you be so kind as to take a very small parcel to London? When would you allow me to send it? Madame Denis joins all her feelings to mine..."... This letter seems unpublished.

Il me parait etre fait comme elle| melée de mal et de bien. Votre conversation nest pas dans ce cas, et puisquil y a des maux dans la nature et en tres grand nombre, un des miens est en verité monsieur de vous avoir connu trop tard. Daignez repasser par ma chaumiere dans vos voiages. Pouriez vous avoir la bonté de vous charger d'un tres petit paquet pour Londres ? Quand permettez vous que je vous lenvoye ? Madame Denis joint tous ses sentiments aux miens»... Cette lettre semble inédite.

She saw Cory [BELL, her sister Vanessa's brother-in-law Vanessa] and agreed to have dinner with him and Maurois on July 6| so she would like to come on the 4th, but does he agree to have dinner with them on the 13th? It's all a long way off, "but then so are you".

YOURCENAR Marguerite (1903-1987) 2 L.A.S. and 1 L.S. "Marguerite Yourcenar", Petite Plaisance, Northeast Harbor (Maine) 1968-1974, to Pascal PIA| 3 pages large in-8, 1 page in-4, one postcard ill. with address, 2 envelopes. June 26, 1968. She has just read her article from Carrefour on L'OEuvre au noir: "You think it touched me infinitely. Above all, I was very sensitive to your very thorough analysis of the relations between Zeno and the Prior of the Cordeliers, this dialogue between the atheist (or virtually such and such) and the Christian, which at the time could only take place with infinite reticence on the part of the first of these two interlocutors [...]"....] For me too, these pages are at the very center of the book - and I am most grateful to you for having so admirably brought out the essence of what I wanted to do, if not of what I did. Unceasingly while reading to you I had the feeling to be judged by someone who knows as well and undoubtedly better than me this exciting and confused time that we represent so often in a rough and only schematic way" . It can be explained by two errors pointed out by Pia... August 15, 1971. Her essay on Denier du rêve is so rich and complete "that I feel obliged to say thank you at greater length. Every writer tends, I believe, to classify his critics into various categories", including "those, extremely rare, endowed with a sense of human life, those who analyze and judge the interpretation that the author has tried to give of it. And such a meaning also presupposes that of the exact moment when the events took place, that is to say of history, even if history, as in Denier du Rêve, is situated only at the already immense distance of forty years"... July 8, 1974. Card thanking "for this very beautiful and complete analysis of Pious Memories"...

Elle vient de lire son article de Carrefour sur L'OEuvre au noir: «Vous pensez bien qu'il m'a infiniment touchée. J'ai été surtout très sensible à votre analyse si poussée des rapports entre Zénon et le Prieur des Cordeliers, ce dialogue entre l'athée (ou virtuellement tel) et le chrétien, qui ne pouvait guère à l'époque avoir lieu qu'avec d'infinies réticences de la part du premier de ces deux interlocuteurs [...] Pour moi aussi, ces pages se situent tout au centre du livre - et je vous sais le plus grand gré d'avoir si admirablement dégagé l'essentiel de ce que j'ai voulu faire, sinon de ce que j'ai fait. Sans cesse en vous lisant j'ai eu le sentiment d'être jugée par quelqu'un qui connaît aussi bien et sans doute mieux que moi cette époque passionnante et confuse qu'on représente si souvent en gros et de façon seulement schématique»... Elle s'explique sur deux erreurs signalées par Pia... 15 août 1971. Son essai sur Denier du rêve est si riche et si complet «que je me sens obligée de vous dire plus longuement merci. Tout écrivain tend, je crois, à ranger ses critiques dans diverses catégories», dont «ceux, rarissimes, doués d'un sens de la vie humaine, ceux qui analysent et jugent l'interprétation que l'auteur a essayé de donner de celle-ci. Et un tel sens suppose aussi celui du moment exact où les événements ont eu lieu, donc de l'histoire, même si l'histoire comme dans Denier du Rêve n'est située qu'à la distance, déjà immense, d'une quarantaine d'années»... 8 juillet 1974. Carte remerciant «pour cette très belle et très complète analyse de Souvenirs Pieux»...

"Mrs. Jack LANG phoned me this morning and offered to accompany her husband on an 8-day tour of Mexico, I believe the first week of July. I declined, of course, and she lamented the fact that she would not see me again before we left for Japan, "having so many things to say and so many addresses to give". I told her that you had been in Paris since yesterday, that you would surely go and greet her (I understand she won't be going to Mexico) and that she could give you all this advice. I also said that we'd spoken on American Radio about the concerts in the street, with great praise"...

Elle annonce la floraison d'iris près du jardin potager. «Mme Jack LANG m'a téléphoné ce matin en m'offrant d'accompagner son mari pour un tour de 8 jours au Mexique, la première semaine de juillet, je crois. J'ai refusé, bien entendu, et elle a déploré le fait qu'elle ne me reverrait pas avant notre départ pour le Japon, “ayant tant de choses à dire et d'adresses à donner”. Je lui ai dit que vous étiez à Paris depuis hier, que vous iriez sûrement la saluer (je crois comprendre qu'elle n'ira pas au Mexique) et qu'elle pourrait vous donner tous ces conseils. J'ai dit aussi qu'on avait parlé à la Radio américaine des concerts dans la rue, avec grands éloges»...

He asks the Minister for "an interview on the aviation affair of which you were the promoter and which has since been so unfortunately abandoned by General Billot, without any serious motive since he himself recognized the importance of the results obtained, following the report of General Mensier, president of the Commission. It was only on the pretext that I had declared that I could not continue at my own expense that everything was lost. Fortunately, my work is still intact, and even extremely advanced. ...] Instead of seeing a future weapon of war of the most fearsome kind go off at random, perhaps turning against us, I would prefer to see it entirely in the service of my country. If you so desire, I would be happy to be at your disposal again, and this time it would be to complete the work completely"... Provenance Sale Ader 18 June 2015, n° 215.

ADER Clément (1841-1925) L.A.S., Paris 27 novembre 1898, [à Charles de FREYCINET, ministre de la Guerre]| 2 pages in-8. Lettre «personnelle» du «père de l'aviation» à propos de son projet d'avion. Il demande au ministre «un entretien au sujet de l'affaire de l'aviation dont vous avez été le promoteur et qui depuis a été si malheureusement abandonné par Monsieur le Général Billot, sans aucun motif sérieux puisque lui-même a reconnu l'importance des résultats obtenus, à la suite du rapport de Monsieur le Général Mensier, président de la Commission. C'est seulement sous prétexte que j'avais déclaré ne pouvoir continuer à mes frais que tout fut perdu. Mes travaux sont encore heureusement intacts, et même extrêmement avancés. [...] au lieu de voir une future arme de guerre des plus redoutables, s'en aller au hasard, peut être se tourner contre nous, je préfèrerais la voir entièrement au service de mon pays. Physics of the Globe. - The secular variations in the degree of saltiness of the seas and on the acclimatization of nature. Leçon destinée aux Entretiens populaires, a collective work published under the direction of Évariste Thévenin, and under the aegis of the Association polytechnique (2nd series, 1861, Hachette, "Bibliothèque des chemins de fer", 1862). Babinet recommends the introduction of herrings in the European and American lakes, but it is "especially the seal, an animal high in the organic scale and very intelligent", that he would like to see brought in the artificial lakes of the woods of Boulogne and Vincennes, and the lakes of Switzerland and Italy: he puts the Imperial Acclimatization Society "in residence to get these curious and educable amphibians"... Invitation to the mathematician Lefébure to come alone or in company on Sunday: "I fear that the planet Horned is invisible if the horison of the setting sun is not very clear, as it often happens. You have to come before 8 o'clock to see Venus. Then we will have Saturn and its ring, the scintillation of Scorpio, the double of the Dogs and the beak of the Swan. That's all there is in the sky at the moment"...

"Radius of the earth - 6,366,400 kilos. - Surrounded by air - Gas mixture. The atmosphere is not indefinite - If we don't know exactly its limits we know its weight. We will see later how various phenomena assign a probable limit to the limited height of the atmosphere" . He evokes some pioneers in the work on atmospheric pressure: Galileo, Descartes, Torricelli, Pascal, Otto de Guericke| he notes various headings - "Expansion of a bladder in a vacuum - Archimedes' Principle - Baroscope", etc... -as well as some formulas: "(4 Ho - 4 H) = Kn", etc. 2nd lesson. "Measuring heights with the barometer. K (x - xo) = Log Ho - Log H". The pressure decreases faster than the Height increases. The temperature of both stations must be taken into account. À 7000 - 32. À 8500 - 26 ¼. The law of decrease varies with latitude. Laplace's formula [...] Tables are used. The two observations must be comparable and must be protected from diurnal and accidental variations"... And to propose another method of determining pressure, illustrating his notes with a sketch of a hypsometric thermometer... Notes on the composition of the atmosphere follow...

L'atmosphère n'est pas indéfinie - Si l'on ne connaît pas exactement ses limites on connaît son poids. On verra plus tard comment divers phénomènes assignent une limite probable de la hauteur limitée de l'atmosphère»... Il évoque quelques pionniers dans les travaux sur la pression atmosphérique: Galilée, Descartes, Torricelli, Pascal, Otto de Guericke| il note diverses rubriques - «Expansion d'une vessie dans le vide - Principe d'Archimède - Baroscope», etc. -, ainsi que quelques formules: «(4 Ho - 4 H) = Kn», etc. 2e leçon. «Mesure des hauteurs par le baromètre. K (x - xo) = Log Ho - Log H. La pression décroît plus vite que la Hauteur n'augmente. Il faut tenir compte de la température des deux stations. À 7000 - 32. À 8500 - 26 ¼. La loi de décroissement varie avec la latitude. Formule de Laplace [...] On se sert de tables. Il faut que les deux observations soient comparables et se mettre à l'abri des variations diurnes, et accidentelles»... Et de proposer une autre méthode de détermination de la pression, illustrant ses notes du croquis d'un thermomètre hypsométrique... Suivent des notes sur la composition de l'atmosphère...
