DELACROIX Eugène (1798-1863).
CARNET with autograph drawings and notes, 1857-1858; oblong notebook in-12 (10.2 x 16 cm) of 48 ff. (of which 20 blank), black basane spine, black paper boards embossed with vegetal scrolls, basane pencil holder on upper flap of lower board; handwritten label on upper board. (No. 113/ Eug. Delacroix/ Drawings/ T.10) and workshop stamp in red wax with the number ED; stationer's label inside (J. Berville, Rue de la Chaussée-d'Antin, No. 39). Precious notebook containing 37 original drawings, including two watercolours, mainly of landscapes in Plombières, then in Augerville and Champrosay, with autograph notes. This notebook was started on the occasion of Delacroix's departure for the waters of Plombières; the first notes are written in Nancy on 9 August 1857, and the first drawing made in Plombières on 20 August; after drawings made in Augerville in October, the notebook closes in Champrosay on 18 May 1858. Still unstudied, this notebook is an important contribution to Delacroix's landscape art. There are 26 sheets of drawings: 2 double-page watercolours, and 35 black pencil drawings (graphite or graphite), 9 of which are double-page; that is, 23 landscapes, 11 studies of figures and horses, and 3 studies of a hay cart. Almost all of them are dated, and often captioned. In the pencil drawings, Delacroix often gave indications of colours. The Journal provides an interesting commentary on this notebook. We shall quote a few extracts from it. In Nancy, on 9 August 1857, admiring the paintings of Rubens: "I feel before these paintings that inner movement, that thrill that powerful music gives. O true genius, born for his art!". During his stay at the waters of Plombières (Vosges), from August 19 to 29, 1857. "August 21, Friday. I got up in the morning. I made a sketch in a delightful condition at the promenade des Dames, by the charming stream: the dew covering the slope, the sun through the branches. - Then went up very high on the left. Admirable morning views. I made two sketches there." "August 22, Saturday. In the evening, renewed the walk along the road to Luxeuil. [...] Lovely woods; charming ideas. - I made two souvenirs." "August 29 [...] In the evening, last walk on the Saint-Loup road. I cannot tear myself away from these beauties. On all sides, reapers and tedders and hay wagons piled up and dragged by the good oxen. - In the morning, on the Emperor's walk to the woods. On the way, a scene of reapers and tedders: a charming and rustic effect"... During the stay at the castle of Augerville (Loiret), at his cousin Berryer's (where he will meet the cellist Alexandre Batta, quoted in this notebook), from October 13th to 18th 1857. "14 October, Wednesday. - In the morning, drew in the upper part near Gobertin yellow lime trees. - Then in the cutting, large trees, grand effects; trunks with ivy." On his return to his house in Champrosay (Essonne), 18 May 1858: "Great happiness to see me there". Notes in pencil on the v° of the flyleaf and the 1st leaf: "The accessories in the Last Supper. Nancy / Place de grève - Drouot / tomb.
