PROVENANCE Sale, Les Floralies, Me Blache, Versailles, Hôtel Rameau, 7 June 1966, lot 44 (reproduced in colour) Sale, European Auction Company, Luxembourg, 10 May 1998, lot 131 Private collection, France (acquired at the previous sale) "Kisling is also a romantic, but like his friend Modigliani, he likes to express the inner drama. With him there are no twisted bodies as in Rouault's work, no desolate and tumultuous landscapes as in Utrillo's or Vlaminck's, but all the sadness of hopeless existences, all the suffering that will not be expressed either by cries or by acts, is shown to us in this melancholic face of a little girl, so discreet and so endearing. Kisling who, in the canvases he sends us from the South, shows his taste for bright and slightly acid colours, has treated this portrait with a sobriety that better brings out the pictorial qualities of an artist who is gradually conquering the first place next to the greatest painters of the time." Georges Charensol, "Le Salon des Tuileries", in L'Amour de l'art, 1926, p. 208 "Kisling also focused on frail beings, on the poor and on children. Who does not know this portrait of a young boy as lost in his pilgrimage as in life, his orphans, his beggars, all these works which reach such a great emotion, and where Kisling knew how to find the tragedy of certain popular images. Never in front of his paintings does one have the impression of being in front of a subject. There enters, indeed, in his art a more human reason and meaning." Jacques Guenne, "Portraits d'artistes, Kisling", in L'Art vivant, 15 June 1925, n°12, p. 10
