JEANNE NE LEMERLE Soyer (1879-1967)
A polychrome enamelled copper plate representing a bare foot Diane leaning against a rock. She is holding her arc in her left hand, in her hair she is wearing a crescent moon and she is accompanied by one of her dogs. Signed «Jeanne Lemerle» and dated 1909. Dimensions: 11 x 6 ¼ in Jeanne Lemerle chose the moment when the goddess was resting in a landscape crossed over by a stream winding amongst large rocks. The water flowing at her feet indicates the presence of a spring and probably shows that she has either already bathed or is preparing to bathe. This is why the title seems strange as there are no items representing the hunting theme apart from the dog and the arc. As in Daphnis and Chloé, Jeanne Lemerle interprets the story in her own personal way. This piece was presented in the Salon des Beaux-Arts of 1909 al
