*Citroën SM – 1970 - Lot 74
*Citroën SM – 1970 Swiss registration title, in temporary importation Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970, the SM was striking for its innovative lines, designed by Robert Opron. Its taut lines gave it a unique dynamism. Its excellent Cx of 0.46 was the result of extensive work in the wind tunnel, which dictated its overall appearance. Taking advantage of Citroën’s acquisition of Maserati in 1968, the SM’s bonnet was fitted with an all-new twin-cam V6 2,670 cc engine marked with the Trident. A true technological showcase of the best Citroën could do at the time, it retained the hydropneumatic suspension of the DS and the comfort so dear to Citroën. The new Diravi steering system with servo-assisted return enabled it to maintain high speeds with the greatest of ease. A victim of high prices and demanding maintenance, only 12,920 examples were sold over the five years of production. Today, the model is increasingly sought-after, and is enjoying a resurgence of interest. Our SM has a unique history: it was one of the pre-production examples assembled at Ligier, all destined for hand-picked customers. Its first owner, Mr Morel, worked to promote the best French wines at the 1970 Universal Exhibition in Osaka. In gratitude, the French government gave him one of the first SMs to be made. He will take possession of a superb metallic sand car on 12 October 1970. The story doesn’t end there, because in 1973 its current owner, then an apprentice at the Piller SA workshop in Fribourg, had the privilege of working on the car. It was love at first sight, and he promised himself that one day it would be his. In 2001, Mr Morel decided to sell it, so he seized the opportunity and welcomed the beautiful car into his collection. At the time, the car was not running, and a major restoration programme was launched to restore it to its former glory. The bodywork was completely restored and painted to match the original, while the engine was given a complete overhaul. Today, the car is in an excellent state of preservation, with its original interior magnificently preserved, its leather with a delightful patina and its car radio still present. A perfect blend of modernity, comfort and performance, the SM is a true GT. With its exceptional history, our example is sure to appeal to the most demanding collectors.
