JEAN DUNAND LAQUEUR

Naturalised Swiss artist, Jean Dunand (1877-1942), is known for his Art Deco realisation in brassware and lacquerware, which make him one of the great masters of the decorative arts of the 20th century. He first worked in the workshop of the sculptor Dampt and participated in the execution of the winged horses on the Alexandre III bridge in Paris.

He then decided to devote himself to brassware. The discovery of Asian art, and in particular lacquerware, was a determining factor in his work. He collaborated with Japanese craftsmen who taught him natural lacquer techniques and worked alongside him. It was in 1921, at the Salon des artistes décorateurs, that Jean Dunand presented his lacquer work to the public for the first time. The quality and originality of his creations made him one of the most sought-after portraitists of the 1930s. He immortalised celebrities from the café society, the wives of the great industrialists and the artists of the time on wooden panels coated with layers of lacquer. Les poses sont alanguies au bord de l’eau ou au clair de lune, pour permettre le jeu des reflets et des contrastes. The choice of different times of day or night sometimes gives rise to series, respecting the same composition but with varying tonalities from one to another. The proportions and structure of our panel thus echo the nude of a bather in profile that we sold in November 2021, also made in 1928.
