MAI trung THU (1906-1980)
Femme arrangeant des fleurs, 1956 Ink and color on silk, signed, stamped by the artist and dated upper right, titled on the reverse. In its original frame made by the artist 7 5/8 x 4 1/8 in. Mai Trung Thu, aka Mai Thu, was a Vietnamese painter born in 1906 into a prominent family. His father, Mai Trung Cat, was the governor of Bac Ninh and was made a baron by the French government. In 1925, Mai Thu became one of the first students to attend the Fine Arts School of Indochina run by Victor Tardieu. During his years of study, Mai Thu became interested in painting scenes of rural life in Vietnam. He decided to paint them on silk, an expensive material as delicate as the palette of color he used. In the 1930s, he taught at the elite Quoc Hoc high school in Hue. During this period, he produced a large number of works featuring the women of Hue and landscapes with the Perfume River. He went on several trips to Europe and America, and decided to move to Paris in 1936, though this did not affect his inspiration, as he continues to depict Vietnamese women, children, landscapes and temples. He only returned to Vietnam 38 years later, in 1974. He died in 1980 at the age of 75. With his works, Mai Thu left us a wealth of genuine visual poems depicting his native land.
