A TYPE IIA DIAMOND, SIMILAR TO THE DIAMONDS FROM THE HISTORIC GOLCONDE DEPOSIT Scientists classify diamonds into two main "types", Type I and Type II, depending on whether or not they contain nitrogen atoms in place of carbon atoms in their atomic structure. In Type II diamonds, there is no nitrogen detected in infrared spectrometry, which means that they are diamonds of great chemical purity, with a perfect atomic structure. Type II is divided into two groups: type IIa diamonds, which are very rare (only 0.8% of diamonds belong to this group), are generally colorless, brown or pink, and can be found in deposits in Brazil, South Africa and Lesotho. Type IIb diamonds (containing boron) are extremely rare and vary in color from blue to blue-gray. Most Golconde diamonds belong to this type IIa. Diamonds of this type are referred to as "characteristic water" and are very pure with a sub-metallic luster. According to the LFG (Laboratoire Français de Gemmologie) a "Golconde" diamond is a type IIa diamond, with a D-E-F color and pure to VVS (very very small inclusion(s))*. In addition to these characteristics, the only diamonds that can obtain this designation at the LFG are large diamonds (greater than 5 ct) and old cut diamonds (small table, large crown height, open culet).
