Raymond Hains (1926-2005) - Lot 83
Raymond Hains (1926-2005) Pénélope,2004 Cut plexiglass mounted on plexiglass 101.5 x 142 cm 39 3/4 x 55 9/16 in. Raymond Hains Pénélope, 2004 Pénélope is the second work we feature and represents a very specific part of Raymond Hains' work that was realized between 1952 and 1953. Indeed, in addition to laceration, he experimented all his life with various techniques such as photography, video or plastic arts. The artwork Pénélope stands at the intersection of these two techniques since it is a transcription of images obtained from the film Pénélope made in collaboration with Jacques Villeglé. The two friends were filming with a hypnagogoscopic camera that distorted the images by shooting through fluted glass. The project will never be completed, but Raymond Hains will take up the graphic results and translate them into concrete support. This is how he will create this artpiece in epoxy, presenting hallucinatory shapes and colours from his inspiration for kineticism, making him one of the pioneers of this new trend.
