Alix AYMÉ (1894-1989) - Lot 234
Alix AYMÉ (1894-1989) Maternité sur un fond or Lacquer and gold highlights, signed lower right 39.7 x 40 cm - 15 5/8 x 15 3/4 in. Alix Aymé discovered the technique of lacquer during her trip to Japan in 1928. From this discovery was born a real passion which will allow the revival of this technique and will place her as one of the rare French artists recognized for this medium. Victor Tardieu then asked her to participate in the teaching of this art at the Indochina School of Fine Arts Maternité illustrates her remarkable know-how. Marked by her apprenticeship with Maurice Denis, the lesson of her Nabi master is still legible. The one nicknamed « the nabi with the beautiful icons » passed on to his pupil his iconic vision of portraits and more particularly of the golden backgrounds that she represents with gold leaf or powder. Based on the familiar features of her son François for the little boy, this work evokes the maternities of tenderness. The love binding the two characters is symbolized through this protective hand but also by the cheeks placed one against the other. Dressed in a large cape, this mother is universal, recalling the Italian Madonnas. A modern variation of a Virgin and Child, this maternity is also distinguished by the representation of a subtle sculpted frame in the manner of a trompe l’oeil. Underlining Alix Aymé’s audacious talent, this panel appears as a remarkable testimony of a perfect artistic and technical mastery. It is not surprising that this masterpiece was preciously preserved by one of Alix Aymé’s family members until today
