Mercedes-Benz 170 V Cabriolet B – 1938 - Lot 84
Mercedes-Benz 170 V Cabriolet B – 1938 Dutch registration title The 170 V was unveiled at the 1936 Berlin Motor Show, celebrating 50 years of German automotive engineering. The star brand made a big impression with this front-engined sedan powered by a 1.7-liter 4-cylinder engine developing a modest 38 hp. The base model was available in several body styles, including the Cabriolet, which was extremely rare in this large production run. Our example was delivered new on May 19, 1938, to Dr. Max Gareis, an enthusiast who kept the car for many years, as we learn from the original registration document (Kraftfahrzeugbrief) that still accompanies the car! In 1995, our car reappeared in an appraisal alongside an Auburn 851 Speedster. It was in need of restoration, which was not carried out until 2015 by the previous owner, a major Dutch collector. Today, the car is part of a large Mercedes-Benz collection and is in superb condition. The restoration has aged well, the bodywork is beautiful, as is the upholstery. Our test drive also allowed us to see that, despite little use in recent months, its condition was more than satisfactory. Presented with an attractive estimate, this pre-war car represents a great opportunity for a collector wishing to add one of the most beautiful Mercedes-Benz cars of that era to their collection!
