Lotus Omega – 1991 - Lot 30
Lotus Omega – 1991 French registration title Can one imagine a more boring saloon than the Opel Omega? In the early 1990s, the German brand, now under General Motors’ umbrella, had an ageing image and technology. A decision was made across the Atlantic to give a major shake-up to the anthill... And it was in England that it would happen, at Lotus Cars, a small outfit that had also fallen into the American giant’s hands, and which was called upon for some sensitive or cutting-edge projects. The 6-cylinder engine (now enlarged to 3.6 litres and force-fed by 2 turbos) was transformed, and in addition to the 6-speed gearbox from the Corvette ZR-1, the placid Omega that had asked for nothing underwent a drastic weight-loss treatment. The placid Teutonic saloon was transformed into a true monster capable of showing up everyone, from direct competitors like BMW or Mercedes-Benz to sports car manufacturers, Ferrari and Porsche at the forefront. And the looks weren’t forgotten either! 377 hp for 1,660 kg and a 0-100 km/h sprint completed in 5.3 seconds, with a top speed of 280 km/h... The same performance as a Testarossa in a sensible 4-seat saloon, which led to a real media scandal, particularly in England. Between 1990 and 1992, Lotus manufactured 950 cars, 286 Carltons (the English version) and 664 Omegas. The car illustrated on these pages is one of these Omegas, acquired in 2002 in Belgium by a French enthusiast who made it virtually his daily driver. Now showing nearly 127,000 km on the odometer, it presents itself to us in used condition, but neither accident-damaged nor tampered with, and perfectly functional. It will require some cosmetic care (interior and exterior) before regaining its lustre and being cherished in a new collection. We have also noted that one wheel rim was cracked.
