Porsche 356 B 1600 Super 90 – 1963 - Lot 4
Porsche 356 B 1600 Super 90 – 1963 Period French registration title 8 June 1948, the German government approved production of the first Porsche. Ferdinand Porsche’s 356th project, it took the name 356. With its flat-4 engine in rear overhang, air-cooled and a streamlined and fluid body, the car pleased. Production would quickly organise to meet demand and progressively abandon hand manufacturing. Competition victories came to reinforce the model’s success. When the 356 A entered production in 1955, nearly 8,000 examples had already been manufactured. The range was then available as a coupé, cabriolet, Speedster but also in a prestigious series with sporting destination called Carrera. It was at the end of 1959 that Porsche offered the B. Evolving to meet safety standards, it was distinguished by raised bumpers front and rear, shell-shaped indicators, wider door handles, headlights positioned higher. On the engine side, the 1300 disappeared, giving way to the 1600 in three versions: 60, Super 75 and Super 90. The car illustrated on these pages is a 356 B (T6) coupé from 1963, in 1600 Super 90 version. Perhaps following an accident and a body change, please note that the period registration document that accompanies the car as well as the coachbuilder’s plate riveted in the door pillar indicate the identity 123925, while the cold stamping of the body indicates 117745. It will therefore be up to the purchaser to undertake the necessary steps in order to properly register this car, and give it the appropriate identity. Exhumed after more than 40 years of slumber at the back of a commercial premises in the Poitiers region, it is now a car to be completely restored, both structurally and mechanically. 356s to restore are no longer so common, and this example will delight a confirmed or beginner Porsche enthusiast, with a long-term project. One to watch.
