* Citroën DS 19 – 1957 Swiss registration title, in temporary importation Taking the world by surprise, the DS made its stunning debut on October 6, 1955, under the glass roof of the Grand Palais at the 42nd Paris Motor Show. A masterpiece created by exceptional minds, the DS had the daunting task of succeeding the legendary Traction Avant. It accomplished this with even more flair and audacity, thanks to a top-secret development and a spectacular launch. It captivated the public with its revolutionary and strikingly modern design—a masterpiece by Flaminio Bertoni—but also astonished with its technical innovations: hydropneumatic suspension, power steering, disc brakes, and a semi-automatic gearbox, to name just a few. Over a 20-year career, the DS evolved into a wide range of models, from the elegant convertible to the practical station wagon. It also made its mark in motorsport, notably winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1958. A true legend and a symbol of an era of French industrial brilliance, the DS is one of the most collected cars in the world. Enthusiasts drive them daily, whether in California or Australia, proving their remarkable durability and ease of use. Early examples are true rarities, highly sought after and now showcased in the world’s finest collections and automotive museums. Today, we are privileged to present to you one such example — perhaps the rarest and most avant-garde of all. Delivered new in France, its first owner was a forestry expert living in Blessac, near Aubusson in the Creuse region. Our example features the same exterior configuration as the model displayed at the 1957 Paris Motor Show — gorgeous Jonquil Yellow paint with a metallic gray roof. The interior boasts the most daring upholstery choice of all, yet now the most coveted by collectors: the Hélanca fabric. Thanks to a copy of its first registration document, we know that its original license plate was 701 AR 23 and that it was later imported to Germany in 1979 before crossing paths with Mr. D. in 2008. According to its current owner, it was never modified or tampered with — making it an ideal restoration candidate, allowing the preservation of its most important interior and exterior components. The restoration, carried out between 2008 and 2009, was nothing short of meticulous. Chassis, bodywork, mechanics, hydraulic system, electrical wiring, cooling system—every detail was addressed with the utmost care. The investments made were extravagant, but for Mr. D., only perfection would suffice. Aesthetically, the paintwork is beautifully applied to the car’s flowing curves, and the upholstery is flawless. Knowledgeable collectors will appreciate all the minute details that distinguish the early DS models: aluminum hood, absence of a push-button trunk release, plexiglass rear window, short fenders, central exhaust, translucent roof, and many more. In excellent condition, its dashboard remains original, featuring the rare ashtray with an integrated clock — an item that very few cars have retained. Converted to “green fluid”, the car was extensively used by Mr. D. in rallies and touring events. It has been displayed at some of the most prestigious automotive gatherings, including: The Concours d’Élégance at the Cité de l’Automobile in Mulhouse, where it won first prize, presented by Flaminio Bertoni himself. The Epoqu’Auto Show in 2012. The Coppet Concours in Switzerland, where Mr. D.’s entire collection received a special award for its diversity and outstanding quality. Sold with its original owner’s manual, a period brochure from the correct model year, an original repair manual, and a 1957 DS19 spare parts catalog, this DS is as complete as it gets. We are tempted to say it is perfect in every way!
