Diam. 55 mm Gross weight 125,4 g EDOUARD JUVET, Fleurier Mid 19th century Gold and enamel watch made for the Chinese market depicting Titus and Berenice The scene of this watch depicts Titus' farewell to Berenice, a classic event in ancient Rome. At the height of the Judean War, in 66 AD, the future emperor Titus falls in love with a Judean princess, Berenice, whom he wants to marry, but their love will be sacrificed in the face of the reason of State, which will inspire many playwrights such as Corneille or Racine. This second example of a watch, made for the Chinese market and still signed by Edouard Juvet, has a smaller diameter than the previous example illustrated in lot 24. In the interpretation of Titus' tragic farewell to Berenice on the case back, there are slight differences in the staging, with the jug in the lower left-hand section less visible. This time, the subject of Titus and Berenice is treated more intensely, with the figures more tightly packed into the frame, as if the two characters were even more present and symbolic.
