BYZANTINE RING WITH "THE TRUE CROSS in yellow gold, oval plateau bezel engraved of the exalted True Cross. and engraved legend in Greek. Byzantine art, 7th - 11th century. Dimensions of bezel: Height: 2.1 cm Width: 1.5 cm - Weight: 15 g. (Very good condition) The iconography of this rare Byzantine ring is that of the is that of the "True Cross" in the same emblematic emblematic design of gallows and steps found on most Byzantine coins since the reign of since the reign of Heraclius (610-641), who restored to the Empire. According to tradition, the True Cross was discovered in 326 by Saint Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great.
