BUST OF EPHESUS - Lot 10
BUST OF EPHESUS in carved white marble, head looking slightly slightly to his left, crowned with laurels, the back of the headdress falling low on the nape of the neck in singular curls a slight Adam's apple visible. He wears a tunic with a fibula over his right shoulder right shoulder and an elaborate strap over his torso. Presumed to be Roman, 1st or 2nd century (?) Height: 43 cm - Width: 31.5 cm Depth: 14 cm On a circular pedestal: Total height: 57 cm (Repolished parts, erosions, small missing parts) PROVENANCE - Former Galerie Phillippe Dodier. - Private collection, Sceaux. The features of our bust suggest that suggest that it is a divinized representation of a Mauritanian king like Juba II or his son Ptolemy in the guise of Appollon. An antique fragment of the head of Juba II Musée National de Cherchell (Algeria) [Inv.-Nr. S 183] features locks whose characteristic positioning characteristic positioning is remarkably similar to that of our bust (Fig.1).
