PROVENANCE: Serge Rezvani Collection, family heirloom In the early 1960s, at a time when abstract art predominated, the young Gérard Fromanger (1939 - 2021) turned resolutely towards figuration, rapidly becoming one of the major figures of the Nouvelle Figuration, also known as Figuration Narrative. This movement, born in reaction to abstraction, drew its inspiration from consumer society and its constant stream of images. New Figuration artists sought to reintroduce reality into their work, whether through scenes from everyday life or social and political demands. Revealed to the general public in 1964 and 1965, first at the Salon de Mai, then at an exhibition at the Aimé Maeght gallery, Fromanger established himself as a committed artist. He is renowned for his monochrome silhouettes and vivid flat tints of color, marking a revival in figurative art. His work explores motif while liberating color. In this vibrant, colorful canvas entitled Danièle, from the Splendeurs II series (1976), Fromanger explores motif while liberating color, paying tribute to the painter Serge Rezvani and his wife Danièle. In the same series, Fromanger also immortalizes his intellectual and artistic friends, including Jean-Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault and Jacques Prévert.
