PAULE GOBILLARD (1867-1946) - Lot 33
PAULE GOBILLARD (1867-1946) The straw hat Oil on canvas Unsigned Annotated 'Portrait'; 'Roses et faïences', numbered 'g 3621' and signed (or annotated) twice 'Paule Gobillard' on the stretcher Oil on canvas, unsigned, inscribed 'Portrait' ; 'Roses et faïences', numbered 'g 3621' and signed (or inscribed) twice 'Paule Gobillard' on the stretcher 73 x 60 cm - 28 3/5 x 23 5/8 in. Provenance - Galerie Annick Mancheron, Paris - Private collection, France (acquired from the latter) Note "Paule [...], the other young lady, at the earliest stage of her life, saw Manet painted, posed for "Aunt Berthe [Morisot]", heard distant cousin Fragonard praised, smelled petrol and turpentine... and got into the habit of feeling and looking only like a painter. By the time Paul Valéry got to know them - she, her sister Jeannie, and Julie Manet - he had mocked their family's penchant in a little poem [...] Like her aunt Berthe Morisot, she liked to paint everyday gestures, without emphasis or pretension. So those around her had to be wary of any attitude or dress color that might tempt her... on the staircase or stoop, or in the salon of the welcoming Mesnil where she spent long periods of time. An easel was always on the lookout for the bouquet that could hardly be held in its fresh bounds, quickly thinned out around the earthenware, - or the impatient child ready to wilt too, if the spirit and wit of the lady, who spoke with verve while blinking and staring at you, hadn't overcome the boredom of the pose. She worked ardently, modestly, humbly ready to accept fair criticism, as a true and pure artist who prefers it to all praise, and seeks an ideal more than the satisfaction of her vanity. Likewise, she was more inclined to admire the works of other painters than to take pleasure in the delicate canvases created by her intense, dark-blue gaze."
