FRAGMENT OF A FRESCO WITH GERANOMACHY Rare fresco fragment depicting a Pygmy wearing a Corinthian helmet and adorned with a circular shield and spear fighting a crane whose neck he wounds from which blood flows. The scene on terrace and black background. Roman art, 1st or 2nd century. Height: 10.9 cm - Width: 15.6 cm (Accidents, missing parts, restorations, plinths) PROVENANCE - Galerie Serodine, Ascona (Switzerland), sold January 1998. - Christian von Faber-Castell Collection in Kusnacht (Switzerland) - Christie's London sale, December 6, 2017, lot n°63. - Private collection. This rare fragment shows a geranomachy scene, the eternal battle between pygmies cranes. The subject is mentioned by Homer in in the Iliad 3, 3-7, which fired the imagination the imagination of many Greek artists.
