MONET Claude . (1840-1926). - Lot 76
MONET Claude . (1840-1926). L.A.S. "Claude Monet", Paris June 2, 1869, to Arsène HOUSSAYE: 3 pages in-8. Beautiful and moving letter about his difficult beginnings. [Arsène HOUSSAYE was one of the first buyers of Monet's paintings, notably La Femme à la robe verte. Louis GAUDIBERT, a wealthy merchant from Le Havre, supported Monet's early career financially, allowing him to settle in Bougival]. "When I had the honor of seeing you to ask for your support in obtaining permission to work at the Salon, you advised me to move to Paris, where it would obviously be easier for me to take advantage of my small talent. My refusal at the Salon made up my mind completely, because after that failure, I could no longer pretend to do anything at Le Hâvre. Gaudibert has just been kind enough to put me in a position to settle here and bring my little family back. I've settled in and I'm in very good shape and full of courage to work. But alas, this fatal refusal almost takes the bread out of my mouth, and despite my very low prices, dealers and amateurs turn their backs on me. It's especially saddening to see how little interest there is in an art object that doesn't have a price tag. I thought, and I hope you'll excuse me, that since you'd already found a painting of mine to your taste, you might like to see the few paintings I've been able to save from seizure, and in any case I thought you'd be kind enough to help me a little, as my condition is almost hopeless, and the worst of it is that I can't even work anymore. Needless to say, I would do anything at any price to get out of such a situation and to be able to work right away on my next salon, so that such a thing never happens again"... He gives his address: "St Michel commune de Bougival, Seine et Oise".
