HARTUNG Hans (1904-1989). L.A.S. "Hans Hartung", [Arcueil July 3, 1947], to René RENN, in Juan-les-Pins; 3 pages in-4; in French. Autobiographical notes. He gives a brief account of his life, from his birth in Leipzig to his studies... "Begins painting in 1919. 1920 influenced first by Rembrandt, then by the German Impressionists (Slevogt, Corinth). 1921-22 influenced by the works of the German Expressionists (on view at Dresden's Gemäldegalerie): Kokoschka, Nolde and above all Franz Marc. From 1922, painting entirely abstract. Only learns of the existence of other abstract painting in 1925 at a lecture given by Kandinsky in Leipzig". His father forces him to attend art academies in Leipzig and Dresden. First exhibitions (1931-1932). Since 1935, he has lived in Paris. Joined the Foreign Legion in 1939, took refuge in the Lot region in 1940, and in 1943 moved to North Africa to join the Free French Forces... Detailed list of his exhibitions from 1936 (Galerie Pierre) to 1947... Enclosed: 2 black & white photographs of the artist's compositions dated 1945, one with autograph on verso.
