VŨ CAO ĐÀM (1908-2000)
Marguerite au jardin jouant avec les poussins Ink and color on silk, signed lower right 55 x 43 cm - 21 5/8 x 16 7/8 in. Marguerite, Vũ Cao Đàm’s great-niece, is shown here in the family garden in Béziers around 1951. We would like to thank Yannick Vu-Jakober for her comment: “For me it’s more a question of my first cousin Marguerite, the eldest daughter of my first cousin Anna. At that time we lived in neighbouring houses and my cousin by marriage Đỗ Đình Cẩn kept chickens in the garden. She was about five years old, while I was 9 in ‘51’.” Marguerite au jardin jouant avec les poussins is a scene captured by artist Vũ Cao Đàm in 1951. This work in ink and colors on silk shows a little girl sitting in the grass, surrounded by a hen and her chicks. Our painting brings together the syncretism of Vũ Cao Đàm’s pictorial style, between the forms and perspective of Western genre art and the traditions of Vietnamese silk painting. At the center of the work is the child absorbed in the charming scene of the movement of black and white chicks mothered by a white hen. This luminous scene stands out against a background of other poultry frolicking in a Mediterranean garden. The calm, carefree atmosphere is conveyed by the bright colors of the animals and the little girl, contrasting with the dark green and brown tones of the background. In this depiction, Vũ Cao Đàm immortalizes a genre scene set in Béziers, probably during the summer of 1951. Gallinaceans are a recurring theme for the artist. Roosters symbolize bravery, courage and male virility, while hens and chicks may represent family life for the artist, illustrating the values of Vietnamese society.
