NGUYỄN PHAN CHÁNH (1892-1984) ET SON ATELIER
Tổ đan mây / Femmes tissant le rotin, 1960 Ink and color on silk, with a signature and a date lower right, annotated Hong Nam (in reference to the artist's native villagesouth of the Hong Linh mountain) and with a signature upper right 49 x 71,4 cm - 19 ¼ x 28 1/8 in The artist Phan Chánh is reputed to have created new versions of some of the subjects he had painted in his youth, as well as some of his later works. He is said to have received these commissions, notably from the Hanoi Museum, because of his success in the 1930s, and because the first versions were kept in private collections and thus inaccessible to the public. A little later, around 1980, additional versions, produced by himself or under his supervision, were also distributed with the museum’s approval. In his work, the artist draws inspiration from the rural world in all its authenticity. Handicrafts are given pride of place, with scenes of daily life depicted in an intimate, traditional style. The use of a dark palette of earthy colors such as brown, black and ochre, combined with highlights of white, creates effects of light and shadow, creating a very personal atmosphere.
