CHINE DYNASTIE QING, FIN DU XIXe SIÈCLE - Lot 91
CHINE DYNASTIE QING, FIN DU XIXe SIÈCLE = Important panel in black silk satin embroidered with polychrome threads and gold thread overlay depicting an imperial dragon, depicted from the front, chasing the pearl against a background of clouds populated by bats and medallions of blossoming peonies. The animal flies over a band of lishui, tumultuous waves and sacred peaks where Buddhist lions play. Surrounded by a frieze of interlaced swastikas. Framed under glass. Size (when viewed) 150 x 150 cm PROVENANCE Private collection of M. G., executive director of Banque d'Indochine in the 1920s, then by descent. This exceptional panel has remained in the same house since the 1940s, passed down through the family as an integral part of the building's décor. NOTE Under the Qing dynasty, embroidery underwent a prodigious expansion in both artistic and technical terms. To meet the imperial court's need for richly decorated fabrics, three weaving and embroidery factories were founded in Nanjing, Suzhou and Hangzhou in the mid-17th century. These factories not only produced embroidered garments, but also numerous decorative embroideries for the Forbidden City, such as the panel shown here.
