Exceptionnel archet de violon de Dominique PECCATTE Fait vers 1850 Original in all its main parts Superb pernambuco stick, ebony and silver frog and knob Sold with a copy frog Weight: 63.6 g Stick length: 72.6 cm Excellent condition An Exceptional French Silver-Mounted Violin Bow by Dominique Peccatte, circa 1850 Born in Mirecourt in 1810, Dominique Peccatte is one of the legendary names in French bow making, alongside François-Xavier Tourte, Étienne Pajeot and Nicolas Maire. Starting out as a wigmaker's apprentice, he moved to Paris in 1826 to work in Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume's workshop and learn the art of violin making. Under the guidance of Jean Pierre Marie Persoit, he then turned to bow making. Thanks to Persoit's influence and expertise, Peccatte became a leading craftsman. Around 1836, he left Vuillaume to work for François Lupot, taking over management of the workshop on the latter's death in 1838. In 1847, he returned to Mirecourt, where he continued to create bows until the last years of his life, disappearing in 1874. A prolific maker with a spontaneous approach, Peccatte's style skilfully blends the influences of Persoit and Tourte, characterized by square heads and sticks with exceptional playing qualities that are particularly sought-after today, being able to satisfy the demands of the greatest soloists. The example we have the privilege of presenting on November 27 at our next auction dedicated to quartet instruments and bows is an exceptional specimen of the work of this great French Master. Original in all its main parts and made around 1850, it is one of the finest examples of the composer's work. The stick, in superb pernambuco wood, is mounted with its ebony and silver frog and knob, and is in excellent condition, with its original mother-of-pearl. With sound and playing qualities equal to its beauty, this remarkable bow has been preciously conserved and preserved by its owner, a violinist who plays it with a copy frog, included with the lot. We are confident that this jewel of our national heritage will receive the enthusiasm and attention it deserves from virtuosos and discerning collectors alike.
