MAI TRUNG THỨ (1906-1980)
Maternité au fruit, 1942 Ink and color on silk, signed and dated lower left. In the original frame made by the artist. 32,2 x 22,7 cm - 12 11/16 x 8 15/16 in. Depictions of women as mothers are among the oldest forms of artistic expression. Already before our era, in Greek, Egyptian and Indian civilizations, mothers and their children were represented. This unique bond has continued to inspire artists and is still a major theme today. Sometimes individualized but more generally standardized, it is often the vision of an idealized maternity. Among these idyllic representations, the maternities of tenderness inspired by religious painting stand out. Made in 1942, Maternity with Fruit illustrates the timelessness of this theme. A mother holds her child in her arms. The tenderness uniting the two characters can be read through a kiss on the cheek but also a hand on the shoulder. Initiated by the Byzantine iconographers and then taken up by the painters of the Italian Renaissance, the tradition of the Virgin of tenderness is perfectly perpetuated here. The background is plain with golden resonance. The refined clothing translates the status of these characters who respond to the Asian canon. The hanging made of transparency completes this refined decoration and allows the artist to show his mastery. A cultivated and intellectual artist, Mai Trung Thứ draws another source of inspiration from religious iconography: that of the Virgin and Child with a fruit. Rich in symbols, round fruits such as apples or even peaches can be found on Christian or pagan paintings, sculptures. The apple of Discord given by Paris or the apple of Adam and Eve but also the golden apples of the Garden of Hesperides evoke immortality, knowledge. Peaches are associated with immortality in Asian iconography but also with spring, fertility and purity. Beyond a simple representation of a mother with her child, Maternité au fruit illustrates the renewal of a traditional theme based on universal codes while highlighting the artist’s own Vietnamese influences. Given as a birth gift by Mai Trung Thứ to the current collector, this work is one of expression of filial love.
