MAI TRUNG THỨ (1906-1980)
Contemplation, 1979 Ink and color on silk, signed and dated upper right. In its original frame made by the artist. 15,5 x 27,2 cm - 6 1/8 x 10 3/4 in Although Mai Trung Thứ has resided in France for more than half of his life, his sources of inspiration will always remain linked to his native Vietnam. His bucolic representations and his colorful style have charmed many French galleries that chose to hang his works on their walls. Among them, the Vendôme Gallery in Paris proposes an exhibition entitled The Poetic Universe of Maï-Thu, Paintings on Silk. Organized from December 1979 to January 1980, this exhibition was the last of the artist who died a few months later. Contemplation, created in 1979, was one of the works exhibited at this last event. Titled as such by the Vendôme gallery, it illustrates the last pictorial period of the artist. If the medium used is invariably gouache and ink on silk, the colors are bright and joyful. The palette made of complementary colors is characteristic of these years. The yellow and blue assert themselves on the girl’s outfit while these colors blend skillfully in the background. The treatment of the decor is simple, devoid of artifice. The background made of a brushed touch underlines the artist’s mastery and brings a modern aspect to the composition. The simplicity of this moment but also the freshness of this young teenager with Vietnamese features underline the desire of the artist to leave to posterity a joyful vision of his dear country.
