GASTON CHAISSAC (1910 - 1964)
Composition abstraite, 1962 Watercolor and India ink on paper, signed lower right and dated lower left. Bearing the label of the Louis Carré gallery on the back of the frame. 50 x 64.8 cm 19 11/16 x 25 33/64 in. (oeuvre insolée) Gaston Chaissac Gaston Chaissac is a French painter and poet, born in 1910 and died in 1964, his multi-faceted work has characteristics at the midpoint of contemporary and modern art. Initiated to painting by Otto Freundlich then self-taught, freed from conventions, his approach is based on experimentation. He mixes techniques and styles to obtain an unclassable hybrid result. Beyond his status of artist, he maintains an important literary production, particularly epistolary, which allows him to get closer to a great number of his contemporaries. This small watercolor and India ink on paper, dating from 1962, shows Chaissac's work at its peak. His style, very marked, almost naïve, reminds that of Bruts artists such as Jean Dubuffet. It is a mature work, close to the end of his career, which however preserves all the inventive force of his younger productions.
