KIM TSCHANG-YEUL (1929 - 2021) SOLD
Gouttes d'eau, 1973 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, signed, titled, dated and bearing the stamp of the Thot gallery in Avignon on the back on the frame. 50 x 50 cm 19 11/16 x 19 11/16 in Kim Tschang-Yeul Kim Tschang-Yeul was born in South Korea in 1929 and died in Paris in 2021. He discovered painting through calligraphy, which he learned as a child, before developing an abstract aesthetic that he practiced until the 1960s. He began to paint drops of water in the early 1970s, a motif that would become the essence of his career, and a motif that he would use on different media and in different forms. This 1973 work marks the beginnings of this meticulous and profoundly aesthetic work of research that he maintained for over fourty years. The drops of water, far from concealing their support, sublimate the canvas on which they are painted. Magnificent trompe l'oeil, fragile, they take on a precious and unstable aspect, as if the slightest touch could make them disappear. They are traces of the passing moment, questioning art, image and illusion, and inviting the observer to a meditative reflection.
