ALLEGORY OF THE AIR Allegorical sculpture... - Lot 171 - Aguttes
ALLEGORY OF THE AIR Allegorical sculpture in terracotta representing the Air under the features of a young woman standing on a cloud, barely covered by a veil in light movement. With a delicate gesture, she lifts the veil wrapped around her form to cover her head. At her feet behind her is an eagle raising its head while a chameleon is hidden in the folds of the drape to her right. France, 18th century. Height : 58 cm - Width : 18 cm - Depth : 17,6 cm (Accidents, missing parts, restorations, later whitewash) This remarkable terracotta is quite comparable to the white marble statue that was made by Etienne Le Hongre between 1680 and 1685, after a design by Charles Le Brun, to decorate the Parterre d'Eau at Versailles.
