ADRIEN VACHETTE (1753 - 1839)
Rare small rectangular snuffbox in black tortoiseshell and beautiful yellow gold lining. The lid is decorated with a bas-relief of chased yellow gold representing three little lovers playing with a bird and its cage under an oval cabochon of rock crystal set with enamelled gold. Throat elegantly engraved "Vachette" and "20. K. 5". Hallmark of master, hallmark of the Corporation of Goldsmiths of Paris (1797), small guarantee Paris (1809 - 1819), second title Paris (1809 - 1819), double eagle head. Height : 2,6 cm - Width : 8,3 cm Depth: 4.1 cm - Gross weight: 111 g (Minor accidents to the shell) A snuffbox of Vachette, of the same size and also under rock crystal is preserved in the Louvre museum (OA 6814). Adrien Vachette, received master goldsmith in 1799, is notably known for having conceived in 1830 the prototype of the famous miraculous medal of the rue du Bac according to the drawings of Saint Catherine Labourée.
