THAÏLANDE — ROYAUME D'AYUTTHAYA, XVIIe - XVIIIe SIÈCLE
= Important crowned Buddha standing in samabangha, right hand in abhaya mudra raised to shoulder height, left hand delicately holding the edge of his robe. The head is crowned with a crown decorated with foliage and flowers, the hair is done up in a sober pyramidal bun. The face is serene, the expression benevolent, the eyes half-closed encrusted. He is dressed in a fine monastic robe with raised sides. Traces of black gilded lacquer. On a black stone base. Total height with base : 107 cm (Two feet and an outer part of the robe are missing, important oxidation, wear) PROVENANCE Acquired in Southeast Asia at the beginning of the 20th century, then by descent. NOTE The kingdom of Ayutthaya, founded in 1350 by King Ramathibodi I, experienced a period of unprecedented peace and development during the 17th and 18th centuries, after three centuries of military campaigns against its various neighbors. The "Kingdom of Siam" is one of the most prosperous of its time and the capital Ayutthaya attracts travelers and traders from all over the world. This extremely favorable and prosperous context allowed the ruling power to develop an unprecedented artistic program, mainly focused on Buddhist art. Our statue represents the historical Buddha Sakyamuni, crowned and adorned, in his incarnation of the "Cakravartin", the "universal sovereign". This iconography, which underwent significant development during the Ayutthaya period, became emblematic of the productions of this period. The elegantly simple silhouette and the serene pose reflect the majesty and inner strength of the Buddha. The purity of the lines and the harmony of the face are accentuated by the contrast with the rich floral and geometric decoration of the crown. The inlaid eyes give a real presence to the statue, elevating it to the rank of a deity.
