LÊ PHỔ (1907-2001)
La jeune fille et les seringas, circa 1977 Oil on canvas, signed lower right and titled on the back 33,5 x 41,5 cm - 13 1/8 x 16 1/4 in. Classic genre par excellence, still life has always been an exercise that every painter must carry out. Gathering flowers, fruits, vegetables, vanities, it is all the mastery as well as the creativity of the artist, who expresses himself through these compositions. Lê Phổ is no exception to the rule and makes floral compositions one of his favorite subjects from the 1960s. Having forsaken ink on silk in favor of a more western medium, oil on canvas allows him to vary his touch. Indeed, the use of this technique favours wider impastos and a further impressionist palette. Strongly influenced by Western teaching but also marked by his Asian culture of origin, Le Pho renews the traditional of still life genre, to offer a multicultural vision. From his years of apprenticeship in Hanoi to his years spent in Paris, Lê Phổ perfected his technique and innovated, joining the pantheon of great artists depicting flowers.
