LƯƠNG XUÂN NHỊ (1914-2006)
Préparation de la fête du Têt 35,5 x 49 cm - 14 x 19 1/4 in. Ink and color on silk, signed lower left Lương Xuân Nhị is a major figure in the history of 20th century Vietnamese art. A native of Hanoi, where he was born in 1914, he established himself firstly with impressionistic landscapes, then with social realist scenes on his return from a two-year stay in the USSR. His soft colour range and delicate touch give his compositions considerable depth. Colonial expansion went hand in hand with an interest in the arts of the Indochinese peninsula, which led to the founding of several applied art schools. Lương Xuân Nhị graduated in 1937 from the Hanoi Higher School of Fine Arts, which opened in 1924, where French artists worked as teachers. Like many artists who studied here, the painter created an intriguing, graceful mix of Western and Vietnamese subjects and techniques. These words underline the patriotic character that marks the work of Lương Xuân Nhị. His travels between 1950 and 1960 in Eastern Europe but also his two-year stay in Moscow contributed to the development of his nationalist vision. Thus, the social realism practiced in the artistic production of these countries is found in his compositions as in Préparation de la fête du Têt. This is the most important festival in the Vietnamese calendar, announcing the beginning of the Lunar New Year. On this occasion, the north of the country is covered with peach flowers symbolizing happiness and good health. The typical use of ink and colors on silk brings to this painting a traditional charm while the softness of the palette brings a delicacy proper to the artist.
