MAI TRUNG THỨ (1906-1980)
La coiffure, 1958 Ink and color on silk, signed and dated lower left. In its original frame made by the artist. 22 x 20,4 cm - 8 5/8 x 8 in. In La Coiffure, Mai Trung Thứ captures a moment of intimacy, accurately grasps the simplicity and spontaneity of an everyday gesture. Stripped of superfluous decor, the composition is limited to the essential. With the carefulness that characterizes him, the artist chose to represent only a few elements of interpretation: a box containing a comb, a pin adorned with a pearl, flowers to slip into the hair and a papillote. The representation of a traditional and refined Vietnam is expressed through this young woman with Asian canons. Her long delicate hair, her almond-shaped eyes and her graceful figure recall the grace of the women of her country of origin. Subtly, other elements complete this Asian depiction such as the lacquer box, the carved legs of the table or the áo dài worn by the model. If the artist succeeds in capturing the discreet elegance of Far Eastern women, he succeeds more particularly in establishing himself as a painter of intimacy. By immortalizing the transience of a moment but also the naturalness of a young woman at home, barefoot, the gaze following the thread of her thoughts.
