GAUGUIN Paul (1848 - 1903)
L.A.S. "P. Gauguin", [Tahiti 8 December 1892], to Georges-Daniel de MONFREID; 2 pages in-4 in purple ink on linen paper (ink sometimes pale; small accident at one corner without touching the text). Interesting letter about his paintings of Tahiti. He complains about not receiving letters. "I am at the moment in a trance and after a good news. Last month I had received a notice from here that I could leave whenever I wanted, but that the cost of the trip would be charged to the metropolis, the funds being insufficient in the colony. Now I am reassured, I decide to leave in January and in the meantime I get to work; I paint four good canvases. This month I go to Papeete, I talk with the governor: he tells me - You cannot leave, since the minister does not give us a formal order, he only asks us to examine if we can give you a free passage. Our finances do not allow us this expense. So here I am, running the broadside again with 150 in my pocket, what is left. And in case of a favorable answer, I won't have it until the end of April. I'm in a state and I'm brooding". He encloses a note to be sent to Sérurier. "At the same time as my letter, you will receive I think a package of paintings", by an officer. "I dread the journey for these canvases and perhaps there will be some repairs to be made. You will wash them carefully and very carefully so as not to remove the paint and the preparation and you will wax them. You will show them to friends and write to my wife to find out when to send them to her for the Danish exhibition; you will enclose Vahine no te tiare. You will ask her if the exhibition pays for the shipment, in which case you would send them to her mounted on a keyed frame. If not, a roll and send her the exact measurements beforehand so that she can have the frames made. He lists the paintings: "Parau Parau - Conversations, or Gossip. Eaha oe feii. - What? you are jealous. Manaö tupapao. - Think of the revenant, or the spirit of the dead watches. Parahi te maraè - There resides the Maraè (temple of prayers and human sacrifices)". He asks Monfreid to add the following titles to the paintings that do not have them: The woman in the shirt - Te Faaturuma. The big tree landscape - Te raau rahi. The house with the horse - Te fare maori. The two women and a dog - I raro te oviri". He adds: "I have made a choice for this exhibition to satisfy all tastes. Figures, landscapes, nudes. Provided that it arrives in good condition". And he gives instructions for "stretching the canvases well [...] You wet the canvas slightly behind and you stretch. Put the nails in the same holes otherwise it makes bridles". And he gives the address of his wife in Copenhagen, then speaks about the prices: "If by chance extraordinary one rushed to buy I do not want to drop to less than 600 f: according to the importance of the fabric you make the prices, 600, 700, 800 etc... As for the one Manaö tupapaü, this one I wish to keep for later. Or 2000 f. When I arrive, I will see. [...] This painting is for me (Excellent). The genesis, here it is, (for you only). General harmony. Dark sad purple blue sad and chrôme 2. The cloths are chrôme 1 because this color suggests the night without however explaining it and moreover serves as passage between the orange yellow and the green what completes the musical agreement. These flowers are at the same time like phosphorescences in the night (in his thought). The Canaques believe that the sparks of phosphorus that they see at night are the spirits of the dead. -And finally, it is a beautiful piece of painting even though it is not done from life.
