9 L.A.S. "Gaston Chaissac" of which 3 with DRAWING, 1943 - 1962 and s.d., to the gallery owners René and Denise BRETEAU; 22 pages in-4 or in-fol. Interesting correspondence showing the close links between Chaissac and the Breteau who supported and exhibited the artist. Vix early 1943. He calls the gallery owner to ask for drawings, "especially pen-and-ink drawings made in 1939 in the Dordogne". He asks him to find him some handicraft works; toys, saddlery, lampshades... "My drawings, my paintings, I would like to exchange them for drawings, paintings of others and even reproductions. I've made a lot of new things, finds in the last few years," including "decorated papers. He also wrote, and indicated that Albert Gleizes had encouraged him to publish his texts, for which he would have written a preface. He announces his recent marriage and the birth of his daughter Annie... Boulogne par les Essarts [1947 ?]. He is interested in "an authentic graffiti artist" Maurice Charrieau, and he calls himself "the man who obeys the peelings". Then he tells at length a dream in which Dubuffet is involved, and copies four of his new poems, and aphorisms on the peelings... Sainte-Florence-de-l'oie [end 1948]. People are no longer interested in drawings on paper, so he does some on coloquintes, which he proposes to Breteau to exhibit. "And I do anti-alcohol propaganda to please the good women so that they will commission me to paint murals". He speaks of his new home, then of his "crucifixions of a new kind", and of a painting made after Picasso, etc. 1961. June 1. On his portrait done by Michel Degenne (full page drawing on the back, in grease pencil). - Vix October 13. "I still only have the attic, so poorly lit, to paint in. Everything to encourage me to strike on the job so I write instead. Yet I was in the attic painting Wednesday afternoon when the priest came to make his parish visit. My wife, who does not agree with him, did not stop her washing machine for him and their voices reached me [...] Our house could use a watchtower [...] I have some great new paintings that should finish illustrating me, at least hopefully"... He encloses a poem about the farm of Petit Montnommé; on the back of the letter, a blue pen drawing of a character. 1962. Vix January 3. He has done "a large colored drawing of a red skin with yellow eyes [...] My new stock of gouaches is beginning to become considerable"; he speaks of his health problems... - January 11. "My watchtower is not yet ready. I have just painted my monster of the day (11.1.62) which has one eye that says a little shit to the other but must still be a success in its kind. His blue feet are dipped in egg yolk, a little lightened [...] Do you think I could get enough money to open a store in exchange for paintings of junk? I was told that the gallery that will exhibit me in Nantes seems to be an island of cleanliness among the ocean of Nantes' polychrome shit"... Etc. One joined 2 ends of L.A.S. (2 p. in-4 each), speaking about its gouaches, Dubuffet, its dreams... (Some small cracks)
