[JOUVE]. BALZAC, Honoré de
A passion in the desert. Illustrations by Paul Jouve engraved with etching by R. Haasen. Paris : Maxime Cottet-Dumoulin, 1949. In-folio, (4)-70-(3) pages. In sheets with printed cover and publisher's slipcase in imitation snake skin cardboard. First edition of Paul Jouve's compositions, including 13 full-page figures, 3 on double page and 54 banners, etched in colors by Raymond Haasen. Limited edition of 123 copies on Vélin d'Arches justified by the publisher and the artist and a few copies of collaborators; this one of 110 with a suite in black (n° 75). The animal painter, specialized in the representation of wild animals, chooses here to illustrate a little-known text by Balzac which evokes the "love" of a Napoleonic soldier for Mignonne, a panther he met in the desert during the Egyptian campaign. Marcilhac, Paul Jouve, p. 381.
