EUCLIDE - LE MARDELÉ, Pierre
Copy of the chamberlain of the emperor Leopold I The fifteen books of the Geometrical Elements of Euclid Megarian. translated from Greek into French, and increased with several figures and demonstrations, with the correction of the errors committed in other translations... by P. Le Mardelé. Paris : Denys Moreau, 1622. A large volume in-8, engraved title-frontispiece, (22)-1065 (i.e. 1045, page break without missing between pages 236 and 257)-(1) pages. Copy rebacked in old soft vellum, title in ink on spine. Wet stamp on page 1: "GJ (or I) A". First edition of the translation by Pierre Le Mardelé, professor of mathematics in Lyon. It is illustrated with a beautiful allegorical frontispiece engraved by Jaspar Isaac and numerous figures in the text. The year before, a new edition of the translation given by Denis Henrion from the Latin had appeared. That of Le Mardelé, based on the Greek, is rarer. It is close to the Italian version of Tartaglia (1543) established on the texts of Campanus and Zamberti. "Suspected of being only a printer's proofreader, [Le Mardelé] was violently attacked by Henrion in his Response apologétique... for having argued that he corrected in his translation of Euclid's Elements, the mistakes of his predecessors and also those of Henrion himself. Although nothing is known of his life, he seems to have been initiated into mathematics, for he published a treatise on arithmetic in 1626." (Marie Lacoarret, "Les traductions françaises des oeuvres d'Euclide.", Revue d'histoire des sciences et de leurs applications, tome 10, n° 1, 1957, p. 45 n° 13 and 53). PROVENANCE Handwritten bookplate at the bottom of the title: "Christofle Leopold baron de Thürheim", i.e. Christoph Leopold von Thürheim (1629 - 1689), who was chamberlain to Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg (1640-1705). The marginalia in ink, in French, on the first 70 pages seem to be in his hand. (Some browned quires, small brown spots and halos, title formerly lined)
