CHATEAUBRIAND François-René de (1768 - 1848)
L.A.S. "Le vte de Chateaubriand", Paris, June 29, 1825, [to Jean-Baptiste GASTALDI]; 3 pages in-4. Marriage proposal on behalf of his nephew Frederic de Chateaubriand. "My first cousin, Count Armand de Chateaubriand, shot by Buonaparte, for the service of the King, left an only son Frédéric de Chateaubriand my nephew, officer in the Queen's cuirassiers. Frédéric has just written to me that Mademoiselle Jenny de Gastaldi and her family have shown him some kindness: he expresses himself with a vivacity which cannot leave me any doubt about the feelings he has for Mademoiselle de Gastaldi. My nephew [...] has only his name, his sword, a reasonable mind, an excellent character and a conduct full of honor. If in this position of fortune, he could aspire to the hand of Mademoiselle de Gastaldi, I would dare, Sir, to ask her for him. I consider Frédéric as my son, he is perhaps destined to perpetuate my name: I have no children; my other nephew, son of my brother, colonel of the chasseurs de l'Arriège and heir to my peerage, has only daughters up to now. I have nothing to leave to Frederic at this moment, but he is young, and many chances can improve his fate"... He gives his address "rue du Regard, n° 7". [Chateaubriand looked after his nephew Frédéric after Armand's execution, paid for his studies and took care of his establishment. Frédéric de Chateaubriand married Jeanne Thérèse Gastaldi].
