Napoléon Ier (1769-1821) 13 L.S. "Napoleon", "Napole", "Napo", "Nap" or "NP", 2 with autograph corrections, May 12-July 28, 1809, to Archchancellor CAMBACÉRÈS; the letters are written by Méneval, 2 by Fain; 9 half pages in-4. [517-524, 526-530] Entry in Vienna, and installation at Schonbrunn. Schonbrunn May 12. "My Cousin, we entered Vienna, the brother of the duchess of Montebello will give you details. The agenda will let you know the state of things. You can have it printed, & [proclaim strikeout with autograph correction] read in all the theaters"... Ebersdorf May 20. "I see with pity the lack of consistency of the opinion of Paris, the perpetual fears, and all these effects of bad taste and malice. I am sorry for the people of Paris, and for you who are there. One must have very little spirit to believe in this nonsense and to give head in the belief that Prussia is declaring war on us. It is also true that the Minister of War [Clarke] has done everything he could to alarm the public, and that rumors that are not common sense have been given as sure... Ebersdorf May 27. "My Cousin, I am sending a page to the Empress to warn her of the arrival of Eugene with his whole army. While waiting for the Bulletin to arrive, I am sending you the enclosed proclamation. You can have it published in all the shows, if it reaches you in the evening. Send it by extraordinary mail in Holland and in Spain"... Ebersdorf May 31. Death of Lannes (who had been wounded at Essling). "My Cousin, the Duke of Montebello died this morning. [...] I write to Munich and to Strasbourg so that if the Duchess was on her way, she should be prevented from going further. Have letters patent given to her eldest son. The Duke of Montebello died not so much from his wound as from a pernicious fever that joined the illness. He was assisted in his last moments by Doctor Frank"... Schonbrunn June 10. "The situation of the Minister of the Interior [Cretet] grieves me. Your letters seem to leave little hope"... Schonbrunn June 13. "There is nothing new here. The Poles have not only reconquered the entire Duchy of Warsaw, but are also masters of a large part of Galicia. On the 2nd of the month, the Austrians evacuated Warsaw "... Schonbrunn June 25. "Your correspondence is not instructive and tells me nothing of the opinion of Paris and of what I have interest in knowing at such a great distance5578. Would it not be possible to give it a more interesting and useful turn"... Schonbrunn June 29. He authorized Cretet, who was ill, to go and take the waters. "I charge the minister of the Police [Fouché] with the portfolio of the Interior during the absence of M. Cretet". Wolkersdorf July 9. "My Cousin, I received your letter of July 3; I read it with interest"... Schonbrunn July 14. "It would be necessary to deal with the Council of State for a regulation on the stockbrokers; you see how necessary this is. The most criminal rumors are spread, and this is due, not to malice, but to speculation on the rise or fall. It is instantaneous to put an end to this game of agiotage which compromises public tranquility"... Schonbrunn July 15. "I learn that there are discussions in the family of Maréchal Lannes, a priest, a bad subject, would like to strip his children. I want you to take steps to prevent these scandals, and to make it known that I want to intervene in these matters. My intention is to appoint a guardian ex officio. I have confidence in the mother, I have none in the uncles. I want them not to meddle in any way with the affairs of the Marshal... Schonbrunn July 23, with 2 autograph corrections. "It is without my orders and against my will that one made leave the Pope of Rome; it is still without my orders and against my will that one makes him enter France. But I am informed of this only ten or twelve days after it is carried out. From the moment that I will know the Pope stationary somewhere, & that my intentions can be known in time and carried out, I will see the measures which I will have to take "... Schonbrunn July 28. "I am very pleased that the Conseiller d'Etat Jaubert has been named subrogated guardian of the children of the Duke of Montebello. Thus everything is arranged in accordance with my wishes"...
