LA FONTAINE (Jean de) (1621-1695) Contes et nouvelles en vers. Amsterdam [i.e. Paris]: 1762 Two volumes in-8 (115 x 180 mm), portrait-frontispiece of La Fontaine, xiv-(2)-268-(2) pp. 8 pp. (Avis au relieur) and 39 plates; portrait-frontispiece of Eisen, (2)-viii-(2)-306-(3) pp. 9-16 (continuation of Avis au relieur) and 41 plates. Contemporary red morocco, smooth spine decorated with flowers, gilt title, triple gilt fillet on the boards, fillet on the edges and inner lace, gilt edges on marbled boards. (Some rusty leaves.) Famous edition called "des Fermiers généraux". Commissioned by the Fermiers généraux, it is considered as one of the most perfect productions of the 18th century printing, and the masterpiece of Charles Eisen. The illustration includes 2 portraits (La Fontaine after Rigaud, engraved by Ficquet and Eisen after Vispré, engraved by Ficquet), 80 plates after Eisen engraved with etching by Aliamet, Baquoy, Flipart, Lafosse, Lemire and Longuet, 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe by Choffard. Concerning the states of the figures, "le Cas de conscience" (vol. II, pp. 142- 143) is in the covered state, "le Diable de Papefiguière" (vol. II, pp. 148-149) in the uncovered state, "Alix malade" (vol. I, pp. 228-229) and "le Remède" (vol. II, p. 259) are with the ornaments, "L'autre Imitation d'Anacréon" is with the arrow (vol. III, p. 257), " Féronde ou le Purgatoire " without the cap (vol. II, p. 157), " le Roi Candaule " before the plate under the queen's leg (vol. II, p. 173), " le Cocu batu et content " (vol. I, p. 23) and " les Cordeliers de Catalogne " (vol. II, p. 29) regrafted by Longueil, the final cul-de-lampe of the first volume is after the letter. PROVENANCE Lord George Lennox, Stoke (bookplate).
