[COLBERT] HAMMOND (Henry) (1605-1660) - Lot 53
[COLBERT] HAMMOND (Henry) (1605-1660) Dissertationes quatuor Dissertationes quatuor, quibus episcopatus jura ex s. scripturis et primæva antiqvitate adstruuntur, contra sententiam Blondelli et aliorum. London, James Flescher for Richard Royston, 1651. In-4 (137 x 198 mm), (22)-294-(20) pp. Contemporary red morocco, spine with ornate bands, crowned numeral repeated in the entrenerfs, triple gilt fillet on the boards, gilt arms in the center, decorated inner edges, gilt edges. (Wet stamp of religious institution in the lower right corner of the title.) First edition of this collection of religious and political controversy. The Anglican minister Henry Hammond responds here to the attacks formulated by the Protestants Claude Saumaise and David Blondel against his writings in favor of the authenticity of the letters of St. Ignatius, interpreted as a defense of the episcopate, and thus, of the Anglican Church proscribed by the Commonwealth of Oliver Cromwell. A favorite chaplain of Charles I, Hammond had been one of the few people to publicly oppose the king's trial, which led to his execution. He remained loyal to the Stuarts throughout his life. Among his scholarly works is the first English translation of Pascal's Provinciales, published in London, by Royston as here, in 1657. A very fine copy bearing the arms and crowned cipher of Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683), with the bookplate "Bibliothecæ Colbertinæ" by his librarian Etienne Baluze.
