Liturgical manuscript probably intended for a Dominican sister of the abbey of Poissy and belonging, according to the arms on f. 3, to the Sautereau family, lords of Moirans, a noble family of the diocese of Grenoble who participated in the Hundred Years' War (battle of Verneuil, 1424) and in the Italian Wars (battle of Fornoue, 1495). This elegant pocket processional was copied for use at the 15th century Royal Abbey of Poissy (now called Prieuré SaintLouis de Poissy), founded by Phillipe IV in 1304 in honor of his grandfather Saint Louis; he then entrusted the place to Dominican nuns. The links with the royal family lasted for centuries and the abbey was even chosen in 1561 for an unsuccessful attempt at reconciliation between Catholics and Protestants known today as the "Colloque de Poissy" (see S. Moreau-Rendu, 1968). The bibliography on manuscripts from the abbey now lists 31 processionals. Joan Naughton, in her study, had first identified twenty-seven of them and thirty-one are now known. Our manuscript is not listed. The volume contains the office of the dead for the use of the Dominicans and a processional with a set of orations dedicated to Dominican use (several processions for St. Dominic and Corpus Christi) and others for the use of the abbey (St. Louis (to whom the abbey was dedicated) and the last two processions were specific to Poissy. There is also a procession dedicated to the purification of the abbey's altars (ff. 48v-49). Although a significant number of the rubrics have masculine forms, several other rubrics and chants refer to the "sorores" of the abbey (see f.97: In professione sororum).
